The M14 is a product improved M1.

-Uses .308, allowing for shorter action while retaining roughly identical ballistics. Ammunition is far cheaper and more available.
-Detachable box magazine holds more than twice the ammunition. No aesthetic ping but you're reloading half as often and not pinching your fingers or banging on the op rod.
-Due to box magazine can mount optics. Not very well by modern standards, but better than the full retard M1-D setup.
-Short stroke gas piston system improves versatility with different loadings, eliminating bent op rods and decreasing vibration.
-Point of balance further back, allowing for better offhand shooting.
-Shoulder thing that goes up.
-Flash hider or muzzle brake.

All the deficiencies it had were present and worse on the M1. Of course times change. M1 was ahead of it's time. M14 was quickly eclipsed by the XM16.
