Fighter bombers at the time were supposed to fly as fast as possible on the deck to their target, pop up, drop weapons and then fly as fast as possible back again.
Stall speed isn't really relevant at the transonic speeds that cold war war strike aircraft flew missions at; It sure as fuck made the F-104 unforgiving to land though (especially for inexperienced W-Ger airforce) along with the maintenance heavy blown flap system the F-104 uses (Although to be fair so does the Mig-21, not that that is a safe aircraft either...):

The speed is probably the main reason why the F-104 so often found it's self in the fighter bomber role; The F-104 still to this day has the unofficial world record for sea level top speed.
