I have read both French and American first hand accounts of the Chauchat. They're mostly positive. You can read some in the book Honour Bound.

The negative aspects come from the M1918 model in .30-06. That book also has the letter that the officer in charge of inspection sent to the Gladiator factory so his team is at fault there for not doing their job.

The Chauchat is a cool gun, but you will never be able to afford anything ever again if you plan to fire 8mm lebel through it.
