Just bring a 30 cal rifle. This handgun bear defense meme is annoying. 7.62x39 will remove winnie far better than any handgun, S&W 500 possibly excluded. Most large caliber handguns suck to shoot and are expensive.

Take a look at the hardcore handgun hunters. For max power you're not looking at a semi-auto, you're in wheelgun territory. I know 454 casul has been chosen for (and used successfully) to harvest grizzly.

That said. I do hate the premise. Don't take a handgun to do a longgun's job. Towns in Alaska where they worry about grizzly and polar bear they carry rifles. Solid shotgun slugs also an option. Could also mix the two worlds and get a 45-70.

I'm not going to tell you not to get a gun, they're fantastic. But. You ought not be buying a handgun for the purpose of bear defense, get bear spray instead it's looking to be more effective in turning a bear encounter to a positive outcome.

If you really have bear and large game concerns get yourself a 45-70 guide gun (or some equivalent rifle) and always carry the spray. Yeah I know you can kill a bear with a handgun, and yeah I've seen the webm of the guy nuking down a moose with a pistol but you really need to be realistic.
Stopping a charge with a handgun is a fantastically bad idea, unless you're an experienced shooter and you've got ice water in your veins.

If purely for defense against bears, moose and the like get a 12 gauge slug gun with the shortest barrel you can buy. If you must have a handgun get .44 mag or larger. Id go with s&w .500.

You can also fire cut-down .410 shotshell out of it, but I don't recommend that other than for fun
