Start training with these now. You should be training your grip strength anyway to control handgun recoil. Focus on thumb-index pinching strength, especially, to have a solid lock of the radial/thumb side of your wrist.

It really depends on this question:

Does he have a superior position over you i.e. does he have you in a choke or joint lock of some kind, or is he in a mount position beating the dog shit out of you?

If the answer to that question is yes, then all trying to grab the guy's nuts is going to do is escalate the level of violence used against you. It's the same thing with eye gouges and biting.
