And for the record I played fallout once and hated it, I'm more of an assassin's creed type of guy

It's a good rifle, but don't think it's the only bolt action in .223, also if they have their stance good and have had some practice they can handle 12g at that age.

Should've mentioned this too in the OP

He's shot mostly .22, although I think .223/7.62x39/20g on a few occasions. Shot .30-30 and .308 for the first time yesterday. He didn't seem very fazed but from watching I could tell he'd be better off with something a little smaller as a first rifle.

Don't worry about recoil all to much, he'll get used to it. Just focus on getting him out hunting with a suitable round, a .303 feels like a .22 when adrenalines pumping through your veins.

Honestly, I think the ruger gunsite scout fits the bill well. It comes in left handed and has spacers to adjust the length of pull so the rifle could grow with him.
