Friend of mine blacksmithed me a knife from a carbon steel saw blade a while back. It's losing its edge but it's very thick and hand sharpening for about 15 minutes hasn't seemed to do much. Is there any techniques I should use for a larger knife or should I just get an automatic grinder of sorts?
Take it to a knife sharpener

You're buddy who made it can't sharpen it for you?

use a large, coarse tool file. that is what i use on my bush axe.

youtube my dude, dont use a grinder it will heat up the steel and make the edge brittle.
just get a smiths stone on amazon and youll be fine.

depending on the grain you can just use a grinder.
You will loose some knife, but gain an edge you know. You may upset your friend but stoning something like that will take more booze than you got.

He's in the Marines now.
there's a professional knife sharpener near richmond virginia. he is cheap. he is good. he is personable.
are you willing to pay shipping?
>not me, and I get no kickbacks. but he did a dozen of mine damned well

make the edge wider, i like a steep angle, it makes for a sharper edge although it dulls easier, but if your not using it to cut down trees why not?
