Well he went through a good many rounds and mags with the AR, so I seriously think it's not too unbelievable that he had to switch when he did. A shotgun is still better than a grenade launcher in terms of practicality and I think you underestimate how effective a shotgun is in close quarters.

They're a logarithmic scale. The shorthand I learned as a student in Speech/Hearing science was
2x as loud = +3 dB
10x as loud = +10 dB
100x as loud = +20 dB
