ITT: Help me decide whether or not to take the HPSP scholarship with the Army for med school (MD/DO school)

Go for it? I'm not sure what your criteria is here OP; but you'll get your schooling paid for, don't have to worry about insurance costs when you practice, and will get work experience.
On the negative side you won't make as much money as you would on the outside, you'll owe the Army time, and be loosely held to Army standards- loosely being the key word.
I haven't met any Army surgeons who really regret their initial decision at any rate.

my vote would be go through med school without it then decide when youre done whether you want to go .mil or not. they'll still forgive your loans if you join after. that way you wont be tied to the decision if you change your mind after 4 years.

i should edit, they'll forgive up to 120k last i checked but there are a signing bonuses and special pay you may receive that would in effect pay off your loans completely. it is more financially advantageous to go HPSP from the start but again, you're tied to that decision.
