BULL FUCKING SHIT! Because no platoon sergeant is going to risk his career because your ass wants to be a special snowflake and wear non standard safety gear. If you wear non standard armor in combat and are shot it's a massive fucking inquiry and SOMEONE is going to prison, if you die while wearing non standard safety gear you loose your entire SGLI payout so your family doesn't get dick to bury you with or cover expenses ,and again SOMEONE is going to prison.

Does this apply with private military contracting. Wearing non standard issued ppe? Do they even issue it?
