forget to add, it can be any of the big 3 calibers (9mm .40 or .35) can be striker fired, DA/SA, SAO or DAO, barrel length cant exceed 5 inches (there is wiggle room but basically anything close to 6 inches is too much)
I could just keep the glock because its department issued so if anything where to happen to it I can easily get a replacement but if I get anything else I have to A.tell my Lt. why I need to switch and B. qualify with it and C. if anything were to happen to it Id have to replace it out of my own pocket
but Im still getting the urge to do it

the model 10 or colt police is the standard, while the snubnose is the detectives guns. Now, a glock 17/22 is the standard and a 19/26 is the detectives gun

no bullshit, the 19 or the 23. If you want to carry glocknotaglock then theres dozens of copies now from refutable brands like Sig sauer, CZ, smith and wesson and HK but this set up is ideal. Light weight, not too big, lots of firepower, simple to operate and lots of aftermarket your department is willing to pay for. There is a reason why glock is still king for cops, maybe in the next decade they can be dethroned by all those copies but its just a tool m8, save the range queens for the range

id argue for a single stack of some sort, you'll be wearing it all the damn time and are less likely to get into run and run shootouts like a patrol unit. Less weight is better and more comfortable, keep a few extra mags near you if youre that worried.
Also this is one of the few times shoulder holsters are acceptable, or be like stabler and cross draw. Real detective work isnt like the movies, its a lot of either walking around and talking to people or sitting at a desk looking up stuff, followed by instances of adrenaline. Regular EDC will be fine, pends, flashlights, pocket knife, ect

Either grab a .357 mag in 4" and learn how to reload speed loaders or a CZ75b blued steel.

Why would you even consider a random gun rather than something you already have some experience/are comfortable with.
Pick up one for the range then carry it once you're comfortable with it if you even end up liking it.

If you don't want a Glock, I'd go Sig or M&P, since they're both common with LE and easy to justify in court or wherever. (With Sig you can say "the FBI and the Army use them, so I figured it was a good choice" and the M&P literally has "police" in the name.) I'd avoid anything with a manual safety too, go striker or DA.

You really can't beat a Glock 26 for detective work. It shoots 95% as well as a 19 with a smaller footprint and less weight. Throw a red dot on it and you're golden.
