Couldn't they have come up with the whole up-sized minigun + radar some time during the Cold War, rather than after?

The U.S. is not on the mainland EurAsian continent. We don't need to become involved in a conflict until we get air superiority.

Until the Russians invent some giant laser turret that fries oncoming aircraft from thousands of miles, or they discover what tesla and his tower that can put down every plane in a giant radius, America will rely on aircraft and will not get involved in a land war unless they own the skies.
AA for US of A is useful only as in air to air missiles, there is no need for anything else.

Actually there are quite a few countries who have either recently acquired small drones or about to.

For example here (Funland) the chosen small UAV is Israeli Orbiter 2. Three meter wingspan, typically flights at 300 - 800 meters up to 3 - 4 hours. In addition of being used for intel they can also be used spotting targets for field artillery, ATGM etc.

You don't need dedicated SPAAG's anymore
All you need is all your normal vehicles to receive tracking data through the networking, and be able to elevate their guns to fire at the aircraft.

First of all, Vulcan's M163 is still 20mm with the same effective range as the slightly smaller, 20mm M61, and had a search only radar, as opposed to modernised Shilkas and Tungs and Gepards and so forth.

So I ask again, why didn't they figure out a larger 30mm + rangefinder radar combo?

>>
>>34138865
>The AN/ALQ-144, AN/ALQ-147, and AN/ALQ-157 are US infra-red guided missile countermeasure devices (IRCM).

>An infrared countermeasure (IRCM) is a device designed to protect aircraft from infrared homing ("heat seeking") missiles by confusing the missiles' infrared guidance system so that they will miss their target (Electronic countermeasure).

>An electronic countermeasure (ECM) is an electrical or electronic device designed to trick or deceive radar, sonar or other detection systems, like infrared (IR) or lasers. It may be used both offensively and defensively to deny targeting information to an enemy. The system may make many separate targets appear to the enemy, or make the real target appear to disappear or move about randomly. It is used effectively to protect aircraft from guided missiles. Most air forces use ECM to protect their aircraft from attack. It has also been deployed by military ships and recently on some advanced tanks to fool laser/IR guided missiles. It is frequently coupled with stealth advances so that the ECM systems have an easier job. Offensive ECM often takes the form of jamming. Defensive ECM includes using blip enhancement and jamming of missile terminal homers.

I mean, there's splitting hairs and then there's splitting heads.
>>

Funny thing is that gun guidance is much more vulnerable than missiles to ECM. Gun need 3-D coordinates and range channel is jammed most easily. Missiles are ok with 2-D coordinates (direction) that always can be obtained (home on jam).
