If a civilian intelligence analyst job says a basic qualification is:
>two to four year analytical experience within DoD or equivalent Government agencies and requires former MOS 35F, 18F, 35D, 34A, or equivalent [insert other branch intelligence jobs]
Does that mean I'd be limited to only the listed MOS for the Army? I know that sounds like a retarded question, but I don't understand why they would only hire certain intelligence MOS, because pretty much all of them have this qualification. I was thinking of doing 35M, but I can't find any decent jobs for that, and this site doesn't list 35M as a qualification.
>>

>>
Does the Ranger course suck as bad as people say?
>>
I'm considering joining here across the pond in germany as a paramedic, training would be three years after basic training and NCO course and would therefore be comparable to a civilian american paramedic.
The minimum contract length would be eight years and would include quite some time as a regular ambulanceman responding to civilian emergency calls at one of our military hospitals.
Any EMT, corpsman, combat medic or similar willing to tell me about the job?
>>
I'm thinking about re-enlisting in the CF reserves. What's the situation like regarding positions and employment? Last I heard we were still bleeding too many people after Afghanistan and infantry suffered the most cuts.
>>
>>34129337
it's about 50%

If you don't suck in A school you'll probably get it

If you have to go talk to the captain at the end of a green table, you'll go back to great lakes and have super fun chill time with recruits trying to dodge IT
>>
>>34129436
RASP or Ranger School?

Either way, it's supposed to suck.
>>
>>34130092
School.
>>
>>34128924

On one hand, if you have applicable analytical experience you could probably argue that bullet pretty easily. Those are usually guidelines that can be bent for the right potential hire.

On the other hand, 35Ms are not analysts, so it's very possible you get out of the military without that analytical experience.

>>34128951

Assuming you mean Option 4?

Yes, but only in the sense that it'll rule out a lot of the strat assignments. You will likely end up in an Airborne unit but that doesn't mean you'll be in a line element. Conventional line unit life for a 35F usually sucks though.
>>
What happens if you fail a TS clearance in the Navy? Do you pick a new rate or get kicked out?
>>
>>34130213

You'll usually get a chance to pick between a couple of rates that are available. Getting denied a TS is fairly rare though, they prescreen out people who are obviously disqualified. As long as you were honest on your paperwork you should be fine.
>>
ANG 15G my 6 years are up in 2019. Would it be realistic for me to join the CG or Navy and reclasssify my MOS to work on boats?
>>
>>34129670
I've worked as a combat medic, transport medic and field hospital medic in Sweden, if you have any questions go ahead but I think it'll be difficult to answer any specifics since nations are quire different on day to day work.

I have a word of warning though. I've met some german soldiers in my time and most of them seemed just to want their term to end. Out of one platoon that I worked with quite a lot over an exercise every soldier I talked to except the platoon sergeant wondered why the hell I was still in the army if I could quit any day... And the platoon sgt might've just been loyal to his officer.

>because pretty much all of them have this qualification.

How the fuck do you know? You haven't even been in for a minute you fuckin cunt.

>but I don't understand why they would only hire certain intelligence MOS

For contract jobs the contracting company is trying to hire someone who already has training and experience so they can put them right into the job. And the contracting agency (likely DoD in this case) not the company that would pay you makes the final hiring decision so it's likely they set the hiring guidelines.

>>
>>34131414

Talk to one of their recruiting teams and put in a packet. 35Fs have slots in pretty much all well-known SOF orgs as well as some less known ones. Some of them also have support elements that you can join without actually being SOF yourself (Special Forces does this, for instance).

Most of them will require you to be airborne qualified beforehand, but not all.

I've got a question regarding the 6month promotion from E1 to E2. I ship off to basic training two days before I reach my 6th month serving, and the ship date is before the RSP drill date for that month. Should I expect to be promoted during reception or basic training, or should I ask my recruiter about an early promotion? I received soldier of the month for my company two months ago so I feel like that should be taken into consideration.

I got the option to go to CIDSAC after because I have a degree, was just wondering what to expect from osut because that's the first stop
>>
>>34134697
Unless it's in your contract that won't actually happen, the people who get that are usually those who kiss the most ass or just at random. I know plenty of MPs with degrees doing the same boring MP shit as everyone else, and even if you are in CID, it's not that special + you can be assigned boring MP shit at any time.

OSUT isn't bad. You get a decent amount of freedom after the BCT portion is over, in fact they can do a lot more there than I could do at 68w AIT in the same time frame, and it's only 16 weeks total.

The problem is that being an MP is shit. The retention rate for the Army is just a bit under 20%, but (and this is just anecdotal) only about 1 in 20 MPs I know intends to re-enlist, and around half are for financial security purposes. The job sucks and is usually very boring, or you're dealing with shitheads who beat their wives or kill themselves in the barracks. Most MPs join thinking it will start a career in civilian or federal law enforcement, but unless you're in CID, MPI, DST, or at Hood/Campbell/Bragg, you're not really learning anything applicable to civilian LE, plus most police departments are full of prior-service, non-MPs who hate the power-tripping fuckers.

If you really want CID, they recruit from most MOSs, and if you want to be in LE after the military, try the Coast Guard, where they actually engage criminals, have federal law enforcement authority, and can continue their career after leaving the military.

>>34134169
That would not be weird. Hundreds of recruits talk to multiple branches each month, and you're signing up to go spend two months living in a room with 60 men showering together. Nothing is weird.
>>
>>34134697
Also, if you have a degree you should try to go commissioned
>>
Am I fucked if I have minor carpal tunnel? I sadly inherited a bunch of shitty problems from my mom's inbred family's side (some joint issues, dermatitis, etc.) and while none of it is severe (personally, I've gotten used to it) I'm sure the military has much stricter standards. I also haven't had a checkup in years so I don't even know if I have something I might not know about.

Point is I really want to join but I have all these stupid health problems that would be irresponsible to lie about...
>>
Any tips for YOU sessions? Aussie here.
>>
>>34134779
Yeah it's in my contract. I won't have any time as an MP. If there is any time between osut and CIDSAC they intern you with a CID unit. You can Google CID pilot to see the program it's on the newer side.

I'd rather do CID than commission, and no officers in CID besides warrant as you know
>>
How can I get a commission without attending ROTC/an academy etc.? I heard an EMT course is useful for that. I'd like to get in as an E-5 or higher. Is this even possible without the aforementioned?
>>
>>34135042
You can't enter higher than E-4, or O-3 depending on your degree (but you also likely wouldn't make it past O-3). EMT certification through the NREMT will get you E-4, but only as a 68W or Navy Corpsman (which is probably e3 actually since their e4s are NCOs).

I dunno about commissioned shit because I can read a map.
>>
>>34135163
Why not? Why wouldn't one make it past O-3? Only through NREMT? So I would have to become a medic, no other option? What about other ways? Whaddaya mean you can read a map? Inside joke? Thanks for answering.
>>
>>34135202
A lot of doctors and a few other things can start at o3 but making it past that and continuing to work as a doctor is rare so it doesn't happen often

NREMT is the only recognized national certification for EMTs so it's required for 68Ws, but if you already have it and it's not expired then you can enlist as e4. In other MOSs, similar certifications that are relevant to the job can guarantee enlistment at a rank higher than e1, but I only know about medic shit. You wouldn't have to be a medic, but if you wanted e4 you would. You can also enlist as an e4 if you have a bachelor's degree or higher but I wouldn't suggest it unless you just can't find a job other than starbucks.

2LTs are famous for getting all their soldiers lost and being drunk pieces of shit with no clue what they're doing but a simultaneous inability to recognize how clueless they are.

Instead of asking questions, tell us what certifications or degrees you have, and what you're interested in doing in the military
>>
If I'm aiming for 2CDO should I finish my degree and enlist at 22 as rifleman, or enlist now and forget about my degree?

The prospect of possibly not even having a go at it is killing me inside, but I'm not sure how helpful the degree will be.
>>
I'm a 24 year old alcoholic high school dropout who's never had an on paper job with no purpose in life. Should I enlist?

No, I'm not trolling. I'm in pretty good shape, no health problems, and I know how to shoot.
>>
>>34135517
You sound like the majority of the military. The only problem you'll have is if they ask for people you know to ask about you, like acquaintances of 5+ years other than relatives. If you have nothing else going on you might as well try.

I can meet standards and I do try, but if I'm packed with some lifelong athletes I usually get smoked. In my defense, I'm 5'8 with flat feet (I already cleared MEPS with them) so I'm not a natural runner.

Considering a POG or support role. Thanks.

beyond the stigma, you don't need to be in peak performance to be selected, though it obviously helps. What really sets yourself apart in the SOF community is your intelligence and willpower.

But again, you are either built to pass or not. You wont know if you dont try. If you grab a handful of combat arms soldiers ,odds are most could pass selection but for most its not the lifestyle they desire nor are they have the aptitude for. Thats where peer selection comes in, If your lucky enough to have relatives in the SOF community your trying to get into thats usually a clear from the peer standpoint, the rest is on you to pass.

My cat is more affectionate and attached to me than either of the dogs I had growing up. When I feed him, he thanks me before he touches the food. He always greets me at the door, and doesn't leave my sight when we're outside. It's all in how you raise them. I wanted a dog, but my landlord back then wouldn't let me, so I got a cat and started his training young and have always fed him good food. He comes when called, and even plays fetch.

I've been cleared off of my medication (10mg Fluoxetine) and am currently tapering off of it. I'm set to be off my October but the recruiters are trying to get me into MEPS as soon as possible so I can take the ASVAB and swear in.

For example I could eat spam for 10 years and I'd be happy but I could not eat almost all of the MREs I've seen, I absolutely can not do it.

The "polygraphs don't work" meme only applies to when you're taking one for a court case. It's easy to make them inconclusive so there's no good evidence for court. Inconclusive result during a job interview = "Unsuitable candidate, next."

The IC is made up of a large network of federal agencies (including the uniformed military's intelligence folks) and contractors. They collect, analyze, and disseminate various forms of intelligence to customers. Customers can be anything from low-level military commanders who needs quick and dirty intel to make tactical decisions all the way up to the president who needs in-depth reports in order to create long-term strategic policy.

Contrary to what you might see in spy movies, most modern intelligence is heavily reliant on technology and involves a lot of office work. Even those who work with human intelligence (the kind you get from talking to people) are going to spend a lot of time typing up reports and going to meetings.

There are various disciplines, but generally all intelligence follows a cycle.

1. Someone gets the raw data in whatever form it comes in - a written statement, a picture, a computer reading, for instance.

2. Someone analyzes that raw data and turns it into intelligence with actual meaning - translating a statement and adding context to it, writing notes on the picture about what is being seen, or explaining what the computer reading means, for instance.

3. Someone takes that finished intelligence "product" and disseminates it to the people that need to know. This is often done via email or spoken brief (IE, talking in front of powerpoint slides).

Not everyone is good at every step. Some of the best analysts are terrible are actually briefing that information in a way that makes sense to the people who need it. Some of the best people at getting information are terrible at understanding the context and analyzing it so that it is actually useful.

A lot of media about the IC tends to focus on that first step, getting the raw information. In reality, that's usually the easiest part of the work. Understanding what it means and getting it to the right people is what most of the IC is concerned with.

>>

I have interests in a type of intelligence analytics, but I also have a friend who wants to be a field op. He thinks that he's gonna be getting in shootouts and car chases, and he really need to sit down and talk to someone who knows what really happens out there.
>>
>>34140560

Your friend sounds like a dumb kid. That's okay, everyone was a dumb kid at some point. I've gotten to do some cool shit during my time in the military and after, but it's always a 1000:1 ratio of humdrum daily stuff to cool shit. I'm fine with that, I enjoy the desk job life.

Just let him pursue his dreams. He'll eventually realize it isn't like the movies, but if he played his cards right he'll still land in a relatively stable and fulfilling career. If you try to disillusion him now he'll probably do something stupid like enlist infantry and ruin his life.

Tell him to get a degree that isn't trash, at least then when his state department plans fall through he'll have a worthwhile degree.

>Can my friends become intelligence contractors if we offer our expertise in automated data analysis/processing and infosec?

Doing infosec/big data for the government is a double-edged sword. On one hand, yes, if you can hold a TS/SCI and do this stuff then you'll literally get your inbox spammed weekly with recruiters asking you to come to the DC area and work contracts in the 80-140k range. On the other hand, if you're genuinely good at this stuff then you can blow those numbers out of the water elsewhere working for big tech on the coasts, or playing the start-up lottery and trying to retire at 25.

The end result is that intel folks tend to be prior military or older people with families who want the stability of working for the government (directly or indirectly). A lot of the freshfaced driven college grads want to work somewhere trendier and more lucrative.

>>34141191

I'm out now but I did some time as all-source. 35F can go into the field but deployment opportunities are entirely dependent on your unit. 35F has the widest range of possible duties/responsibilities of any intel job field by far. No two 35F careers are the same.

This. The job is All Source Analysis but within that task are a variety of more specific topics (leadership analysis, economic, military, political, counter terrorism etc.). And then multiply that by region/state that you could work the portfolio for or where you could deploy and at what level and with who.

I worked Baghdad while in the J2 at Iraq but outside of that I worked regional topics in the Middle East during the second year of the Arab Spring which was different not only in scope but product tempo, length, depth, and subject.

Depends on where they send you.

I work in a hospital state side as an army LPN. They send corpmen here to work in clinics, or on the wards to be nursing assistants. Ie: there's a chance that you'll spend 1-2 years wiping ass, transporting patients around the hospital, getting vital signs, and doing bitch work. We let some of them take over on a patient or two, but its rare because most literally dont know anything about medicine and have to learn on the job, which is understandably difficult.

/k/, just stopping by cause I'm curious about some military things, and this seems like a thread were I would find vets and therefore I don't need to start another thread.
Did any of you vets or active duty guys serve from pre-9/11 days to circa 2005 in Iraq?

Or did you serve with people who did?

Recently I've been very curious about troops' experience from this time period, especially regarding why they joined, what it was like during and once they came back home. I'm graduating with a degree in history in a week and a half and I think I found a subject I want to research and hopefully write about on my spare time.

There are plenty of actual doctors working as 68Ws because it means they get to actually work on the frontlines on occasion instead of sitting in a BAS. Civilian paramedics cannot do more than a 68w; they're trained in more, but that training is literally always available to medics who ask for it, they have more opportunities to use that training if they deploy, and civilian paramedics are limited to scope of practice whereas w
on deployment you're generally the closest thing to a doctor within 3 hours by helicopter and can do whatever the fuck is necessary as long as it does more good than harm. Paramedics don't get to practice on Afghani terrorists who were going to die anyway.

Depends what you want to fly. Army has a shortage but probably not for Apaches, air force and Navy have more opportunities for flight but less of a shortage because that's where people who want to fly gravitate towards. If you don't mind Black Hawks, Chinooks, or UAVs, you could probably do it in tbe Army.
>>
Is it better to be an Intelligence Analyst for the Army or the Marines? What are the pros and cons of both?
>>
>>34145349
Civilian paramedics can do more, depending on protocols. I was one for 5 years in a very liberal EMS system until I became a CRNA. I interface with many medics on a daily basis.

Your definition of front line may be different than infantry's. Heck, you could say I worked front lines but I was just on a FST. Anyone on infantry will say that was NOT on the front, heh.

I mean I live and breath this every day and you're telling me I'm in the wrong? lol...I've never heard of a doc working as a 68w as you mentioned. Not saying it hasn't happened.
>>

>Not combat arms
>Army vs Marines

What the fuck are you thinking? The only time I'd go Marine Intel would be as a reservist because Intel is a secondary mos in the reserves and I could do 0311 as a primary job and get treated slightly less like shit.
>>
>>34145567
There are a few but they're rare. Most are people with master's in another country and enlisted for citizenship, but there are some American doctors mixed in, especially in the Guard, as well as a fuckton of paramedics in non-medical MOSs.

FSTs are cool but I was thinking along the lines of medics in dismounted infantry, especially airborne units.

>If you have arrest in your past or drug selling you're obviously not going to get the clearance.

Currently working with people who've done both of these things in the past, and they have TS/SCI clearances.

It depends how long ago it was and what you've done to turn your life around. The list of stuff that will actually get you denied if you tell them about it is super small. Doing a bunch of dumb shit growing up doesn't make you a security risk unless you're trying to hide it.
>>
>>34144907

>>34143553

If you enlist you'll get advanced rank (E-4 in the Army, E-2 in the Marines, E-3 in Navy/Air Force).

>If it's a specialty with a specific military career, you'll find yourself working there.

To be clear, that is pretty much ONLY direct commissioning medical fields and lawyers. If you have an engineering degree, they won't make you an engineering officer, if you have a CompSci degree they won't make you a technology officer. For 99 % of officers, major has no bearing on where they end up.
>>
>>34145776

For advanced rank when enlisting with a degree, no, it doesn't matter what the degree is in.

Just to confirm, you're aware that flight is tricky to get into? Short of Embry-Riddle/Purdue/etc. ROTC and good flight results, or AF academy you've got good odds of just getting shunted into a mechanic role (army) or MPs (air force).

I looked at aviation some a while back, and a lot of people didn't seem to get that they really want people who already have a clue about flying, be it a Cessna or glider. They don't want to teach you to fly if they can avoid it.
>>
>>34145558
The reason POGs get the most shit from the Marines is because all the support-element actually-useful POGs are from the Navy.

Don't be stupid. If you want to do HUMINT, go Army. I don't know why you'd be asking about Intel for only the ground-pounding doorkicker branches otherwise.
>>
>>34146446

>Short of Embry-Riddle/Purdue/etc. ROTC and good flight results, or AF academy you've got good odds of just getting shunted into a mechanic role (army) or MPs (air force).

Mechanics and MPs are enlisted roles, flying is a commissioned role. There's basically zero chance that you "fail" a pilot pipeline and become enlisted. Plenty of people give up during the application process and decide to enlist, but that's a far cry from being forced into those roles.

In terms of the best way to ensure you get to fly, the Army's warrant officer flight training program will let you apply off the street and you don't even join the Army unless you're accepted to go to pilot training. It's 99.9% rotary wing though.

Not the guy you've been responding to, but you're stating this "doctors as 68W" thing like it's fact. I've heard nothing about it, the guy you're talking to has heard nothing about it.

Where'd you hear it from? If I'm following the conversation chain right, it looks like you're the med school guy looking to join up.Did you get this information off a coworker, a recruiter, or what?

>>

That dude is high. Doctors don't enlist as 68Ws. Doctors young enough to enlist would have so much student loans that their entire 68W paycheck would go into it and not even make a dent every month. Older doctors who are out from under their student loans would be too old to serve.

If qualified doctors wanna go out innawoods and do surgery out of a tent in shithole countries, there are actual charity programs that will pay them decent money to do that.

>>

Worked in a military hospital for two years, never met a single 68W that was a licensed doctor in the US.

Foreigners with degrees who couldn't bring their credentials to the US and wanted to get citizenship by enlisting? Yes.

Dudes with undergrad degrees in biology that intended to use their 68W time to give some "oomph" to a med school application? Absolutely.

Licensed medical doctors in the United States? Nope, never. I don't believe you.

Reminds me of that guy from a couple of /MEG/s ago that said his boss as a mall cop was a retired 2-star.

I'm more willing to believe you got bamboozled by AIT bluster. There's absolutely no point in a licensed MD enlisting, even in the guard.
>>
>>34146742
I'd be willing to believe the mall-cop guy if his story made any sense. I had a boss at a grocery store who drove a fucking Ferrari to work and had his own helicopter that he flew to Vegas on the weekends, he just liked working long hours doing manual labor and had enough money that he didn't need a real job.

As for the doctors I've met, all 3 were definitely knowledgeable enough, the right age (between 30-35) and intended on being flight medics or something of the sort. The guy I met after AIT didn't finish his degree till he was already in the Army but stayed enlisted.

Alot of the dorms have mold and structural issues, its just as bad as every other branch. The thing is, if you live on an air base, you aren't getting shit.

If you live in the same shitty housing/barracks but on a USMC or Army base, than you get the additional pay. The Air Force gets around this by assigning less personnel to joint bases.

Also Air Force NCOs in charge of dorms WILL steal your shit if they feel they can. So don't own anything you like until you can escape the dorms.

What major?

>Will this fuck me when I try to find civilian work in the intelligence community?

No. In fact you'll be in a good place because your clearance will be recent, your experience will be recent, and you'll have a degree already. Honestly having a degree is just to screen people out.

There isn't really a degree program that will make you a good analyst. Majors that require a lot of analytical writing are a plus as far as developing your analytical ability and writing competency. Depending on the university you go to there might be a DIA ICCAE program (there's less than 20 in the US) which means the university is likely to offer classes centered around intelligence and offer extra opportunities to network.

I waited to go to school until I got out and I was able to do my undergrad at a university with an ICCAE program (and pick up a minor from it). It gave me a chance to network. I volunteered for every ICCAE hosted event I could, usually as an escort for guest speakers so I would get to have personal conversations, eat lunch with the person/people, and exchange information. I also got to take some of the classes offered through the program to see what the academic side of analysis was like (undergrad prof who advised me on a bunch of shit including grad school taught an Intelligence Analysis class).

Will he be cool if I just said I wanted to wait to get clean and he won't try to pry?
>>
>>34147624
>What major?
I'm not entirely sure yet. I came in for a History degree (which I know is shitty in it's own right), but I came in with so many credits without realizing it that I could potentially graduate after this winter, without getting all of the required history hours I need for a history degree. So, my actual major will depend on what my credits get me, and it'll probably be with a History minor. I do a lot of analytical writing though for my higher level classes, so that should help me out for analysis.

>>
Likeliness of getting into a fire fight if I join the Marines or Army? Or is infantry just sitting in some desert in California?
>>
>>34147769
>I do a lot of analytical writing though for my higher level classes

I've found the 400/4000 level classes to be hit or miss sometimes. Luckily I happened to run into and befriend a faculty member who teaches undergrad and graduate level courses on intelligence, terrorism, war and conflict etc. (and contacts outside of academia) who emphasizes analytical writing.

While there is the standard long form paper due at the end of the class there are also 5-10 shorter 1 page or shorter papers due that force you to actually think about the given topic. Which is much more realistic for actual analysis. When I was at the J2 in Iraq 90+% of what I worked on involved an analyst comment that was maybe a few sentences. At the ARCENT G2 I wrote the first draft of a white paper but it still got cut down significantly and most of the products I created were very short. You need to be able to pack a lot of substance into a small amount of text. Working on this will really help you.

Army. Easy to get Airborne in initial contract, high possibility of getting into a SOF unit. From there you have your pick of schools to go to for professional and military development while having the best conditions of any unit in the Army. If you want to assuredly get into SOF and do cool guy shit then go to RASP(not many analyst pass) and go to the Ranger Regiment where you will get awesome experience at the cost of a tough lifestyle.

Marines have less money as a branch so you get less opportunity to go to development schools and less training for your job. You also get fucked with more by your leadership and the Corps in general. Plus with the exception of Recon and MARSOC, Marines are dirty legs.

There's boots on the ground in Afghanistan and Trump is in talks to send more.
If you join infantry at this time you might not deploy soon but we've been actively killing people for decades and we arent going to stop anytime soon. If you want combat you might have to do more than one term but eventually we will be in another conflict.

Seriously guys, stop with this. If you don't know anything about the clearance adjudication process stop wildly speculating.

Mortgages don't matter, since they're secured debt, unless you're defaulting on them or they're ridiculous (2 million dollar mortgage and you obviously have no income). Student loans don't matter either, again unless you're not paying them.

Debt that matters for clearances is significant amounts of high-interest unsecured debt (payday loans/credit cards) and debt in default.
