If the Trump Presidency lifts trade bans with Russia, is it worth the wait to maybe get a cheaper ak?
Or am I okay to buy an ak within the next year? This would be my first ak and I am drawn to cheaper weapons of good quality.
Pic related probably what I would buy just would change the handguard.

I'm almost positive Trump will not be lifting that ban. I myself would love it but hey no politics here.
Anyway, If you're going for a quality AK the hungarian AMD isn't a bad choice but I believe its harder to change out that handguard than you think. Every one i've seen has always had that so it leads me to think it isn't super easy to switch to a traditional style one if thats what you wanted.
Check out Lee Armory or Atlantic Firearms, a lot of their AKs are built from parts kits with just enough US made parts to pass. The Polish tantal is my personal favorite.
Just don't settle with some 100% American made garbage. Theres even places that will take parts kits you buy and build them out for you but it can get pricey. Parts kits themselves are cheap just the labor is the killer.

I would like to get an ak-74 as I would enjoy a lighter caliber with less recoil and the price of 7.62 and 5.45 are generally the same online. But everyone recommends a 7.62 as a first ak.

IIRC the ban on the importation of any but a few kinds of russian guns is a treaty stipulation, and would have to be repealed by congress.

If I were in your shoes I'd go 74 not just for the 5.45 but because I personally like the style a little better. Thats just my opinion though
If you think you'd like 7.62 (or because its traditional and you'd want that first) Romanian 47s are nice.

its pretty easy.

Sadly 74s are quite a bit more expensive

Are you able to put the top portion on though or just a different varation of the bottom?

Would it be possible to put a handguard like in pic related onto the AMD 63/65, or would the full thing not be able to fit.

It will never happen

You would need a different gas tube to put anything there.
