>Online reviews mention they got their stocks within ~10 days
>craftbro mentions that due to an influx of orders it might be late
>Okay.jpg

Can we have an SKS thread or a de-Bubbafying thread or something to keep me sane? I'm dying here, guys.

Maybe defying Bubba was defying God. Maybe God loves black polymer tacticool rifles the best and hates classic wooden stocks.

Post your rifle to see how bad she is.

This is what she looked like when I got her. I got rid of the godawful scope mount, bipod, and optic (which I'm pretty sure was broken when my little brother bought it at a gunshow). I also checked and found out that she's a Type 56 and not one of the shitty made-for-export ones, made in 1967 at Jianshe (the /26\ place), and bought a spike bayonet since that's appropriate for the '67 model. I also got a cleaning rod, apparently the wrong one since it doesn't fit between the fingers, but since cleaning rods are cheap I don't mind buying another. I can't install the bayonet or finish restoring it until I have the stock, though, obviously. I don't know if I'll keep the tapco 20s or switch back to the original box mag and stripper clips, I got two 20s and a promag 30 with the rifle and they all seem to work better than the internet led me to believe.

No, think even harder.

He was trying to make a "sniper rifle" out of a pretty good Chinese SKS with all matching numbers, failed, and sold it at a gun show to my little brother in a fit of pique.

I don't remember. I gave him $300, he needed the money and I liked shooting it and thought it deserved better treatment.

Cheer up, that new stock has to arrive soon...right? The guy said he was doing a batch of SKS stocks including mine last week and going into this week, and this week is almost over so...so it has to ship soon...

I'm sort of in a similar spot. I found my sks looking a little like the one you posted below, except the mother fucker decided he wanted to cut the grenade launcher and front sight off to make a "paratrooper" sks. Long story short he fucked up terribly and put the front sight back after getting about halfway through hacking off the bayonet lugs.

Next time he gets to the range with it, not only is it ugly as fuck but it doesn't cycle anymore because he's chopped off too much fucking barrel. So to rectify his mistake he decides to throw away the op rod and spring in order to make a "straight pull .30"

Turn out the piston doesn't like being slammed against the bolt without the op rod in between, because it mushroomed out on the back end. So for about a year and a half I've been looking for SKS parts on the cheap, as well as a local gunsmith that can re-port the new barrel I'm sitting on. I still can't fucking find the damn grenade sights though. Fuck that guy.
>>
>>34123929
I should mention that I bought it for $80 about six months after sandy vagina, so I still thought I was getting a good deal.
>>
>>34123929

That's just fucking horrifying.

Now there's a fucking horror story.

With a drop-in stock and thrown on parts, that's not too hard to fix, but if he's fucked up the gas system then it's another problem.
>>
What honestly is it about bubba-ing milsurp rifles like the Mosin with shit like archangel stocks?
>>
>>34124090
>>34124129
It makes me weep. Though it's the first gun I ever bought on my own and I'll be fucking damned if I don't restore it. I wish I still had pictures of it before I'd done anything to it.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, is that when he was trying to hack off the bayonet lugs he somehow managed to take material off the pivot where it locks into the stock, so it locked a nice maybe 15 degrees out from where it should have been, meaning if you tried shooting it without the bayonet it would stab you in the backs of your hands.

>>34124141
I honestly don't know. I wish I could chalk it up to stupid people but I'm a fucking dumbass and I know better.

They used to be really dirt cheap, and looking back even further in time, in the early 20th century, when real sporting arms were expensive, many outfits would do professional gunsmithing to transform a generic cheap surplus Mauser, Carcano or Krag (back when these were very plentiful), into a good sporting rifle. Even Springfield would rebuild surplus Krag rifles into hunting rifles for commercial sale, in house, and would do remarkably good jobs at it too.

So for a long time, you had people looking back on that, and thinking "Gee, this Nugget is like 100 bux, I bet I could dun build myself a durr gun like grandpapa's Japanese Mauser", which, in theory isn't incorrect, but proper sporting rifles had become more and more affordable and available, so many of the professional sporterizing outfits had just died out over the passing decades, and less smiths were doing it, so then you have people thinking they could do this by themselves (and most can't), leading to some pretty horrific abominations a lot of the time.

There's a conception that this is the leading cause to why milsurp rifles go up in price; bubba causing scarcity, but that's not true, they just stop being imported (because either something happens overseas, or they run out of things to export), and without a huge surplus outstripping demand, they slowly start to climb up to a price that's actually realistic for what the rifle is.

Thankfully, this is a thing that's dying out, because as milsurp gets a higher price, and as modern commercial sporting rifles get cheaper and better, you don't get an inebriated hillbilly looking at an Arisaka and thinking "I could make a hunting rifle for a bargain", because the Arisaka isn't dirt cheap, and a Ruger or Savage is affordable while offering him what he wants out of the box.
>>
>>34124141
Then there's the SKS, which was available for really stupefyingly low prices, like I'm talking them being sold out of a barrel for $80 with surplus ammo being everywhere for dimes, even in 2010 you could still find them for just $200 (milsurp ammo being replaced with almost as cheap commercial ammo), which is a remarkably good deal if you consider what the gun actually is.

So consider what an amazingly good deal it was for so long, and you have some people thinking "Well it's a bit like an AK, I wonder if I could make it be more like an AK, but cheaper?", and companies like Tapco would take advantage of this mentality, with varying degrees of success.

Thankfully, an SKS that's been kitted out with a bunch of parts like that, is generally not hugely difficult to fix, as most of these modifications are drop-in parts that can be removed or replaced, pic related is not even remotely as bad as >>34124129, where the barrel and stock is damaged, and it's questionable if it even cycles properly, pic related still works mechanically. The big issue is usually if the seller has the original parts or not.

Again, the SKS has actually gone up in price, so this is less attractive to people, and AKs are easier to get, and while more expensive, usually not so expensive as to scare people away from just buying a proper one.
You also have cheap shitbox AK builds by Century and I.O which kind of takes some of the heat off the SKS in that sense.

Forgot my image.

But yeah, you can fix *this* SKS.
>>
>>34124110

Trying my best senpai. The real tragedy is that this rifle shoots fantastically. No flaws, no problem, accurate and reliable, bullets seem almost drawn to the bullseye on whatever target I point it at. It's a legitimately great, classic SKS that someone decided should be a Dragunov for some dumb reason.

I'll get this done. Even if I have to wait, it's worth it. I'm never going to sell this rifle, I'll keep it forever unless I someday give it to a grandnephew or something. Theoretically a Timbersmith stock would have been here by now, but as cool as they are they just don't look like the originals, and they don't come with a slot for the bayonet, so I stick by going with Lucky Shot.

>>34124141

Funny story about that. I walked into a tiny little local gun store recently. Only about a dozen rifles on display, mostly fudd guns, when I notice an actual mosin, which is weird because most of the stores around here have very little besides AR-15s. Only the mosin had an optic on it. I casually asked about it, and the clerk told me with 100% confidence that it was a "Soviet sniper rifle" worth $400.

It was literally just a mosin with a cheap scope.

They can sort of be fixed with the old pistol magazine switcheroo.

There's magwell conversions available to install, allowing it to accept 7.62x39mm AR pistol magazines (can also be done to Vz58s), they look a bit out of place, but it allows you to either use detachable mags, or to plain use the AR mag as your new fixed mag and strip clips fully.

Given that a lot of them are old Chinese ones, I don't think it's that much harm.

This actually isn't so bad. As someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, it's all drop in parts so worst case scenario it can be fixed.

But that's actually a pretty sexy build imo.
