It's a very common term. Not even op but I'm combat arms currently and many people refer to it as that. From 11 series, to 19, it's like you're trying to be edgy but instead you just look like a fag.

Perhaps it's a phrase that's used more in some units/posts than others.

Well I was in the mountains by the border both tours so I really only have ABP stories. The one dealing with ANA we had a new recruit was climbing into the back of one of their humvees carrying a RPG with his finger on the trigger and apparently no round safeties engaged. He pulled himself up and jerked the trigger which sent the round into the market down the hill and blew his foot off and another ANAs hand.

no one that's actually fought calls it "the sandbox," it's a term people who want to sound cool use to impress people that don't know how lame and monotonous their job actually was while deployed.

The ANA is, for the most part, poorly equipped, poorly trained and poorly motivated to fight. Mostly uneducated farmers with zero sense of patriotism looking to make a few bucks. Without being babysat by American military forces they are going to be, and are frequently, slaughtered. I would be sad, but two of my friends were murdered by an ANA soldier, and some of them just took naps on patrol when I went out with them. There are however some intelligent and brave (or stupid) ones which weren't completely worthless, but like all turd world countries they lack the drive to actually succeed in their mission and would rather get high and fuck a chai boy. I did have one soldier who spoke broken english, actually wore his issued helmet (shocking) and looked up to and emulated the Marines he worked alongside. I hope he is alive and well, but sadly I assume he's been killed since I patrolled with him last.

Nope. The smart ones get out. Everyone else is completely cool with minding their own business, obeying the most violent gang on the block at the time and continuing their simple life of farming/herding/basic manufacturing. Most interactions with Americans the locals will have had will be from young infantrymen who treated them respectfully, but the same way an LAPD officer would interact with a black guy with face tattoos on the street- cautious and ready to smoke them at a moments notice. They'll have maybe appreciated the big picture of what we tried to do over their, but understood the reality of it, which is that we were just visiting, brought gunfire, IEDs and JDAMs everywhere we went, and likely will have known a relative or friend who had been killed or maimed either fighting or being unlucky enough to have been caught in the middle. We'll have had no more lasting impact on the Afghan way of life as the Russians. The only way to pacify and change the ideology of such a vaste swathe of land is not new to mankind, but has been forgotten. And that is to put every male in the ground and a seed in the pretty one's bellies, and occupy.

That's not an entry requirement btw, it's a graduating requirement. A lot still have to be taught how.

It's a long running 5-way ethnic civil war. The taliban happened to have a simple majority backing them, and they held kabul and kandahar, that's it.

Also, in afghan farsi, everything is called "Tank", even up-armored humvees. If it has an engine and stops small arms, its a tank. They cannot differentiate, either linguistically or conceptually.
