Hans-Ulrich Rudel (2 July 1916– 18 December 1982) was a German ground-attack pilot during World War II. Post-war, he was a prominent neo-Nazi activist in Latin America and West Germany.
During the war, Rudel was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, as well as a number of ships. He claimed 9 aerial victories and the destruction of more than 800 vehicles of all types. He flew 2,530 ground-attack missions exclusively on the Eastern Front, usually flying the Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber, and 430 missions flying fighter aircraft. Rudel was the most decorated German serviceman of World War II receiving the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds in January 1945; the decoration was created specifically for him.

He was consulted, but what actual input he really had is quite questionable, as is the decision to consult him at all, considering that there's about as much proof that he ever killed even a single tank as there is to back up Jud Süss as an historical documentary.
Fact is he was outright short of booted from his squadron at the start of the war, and that every single kill he claimed came just when the Nazis were being decisively pushed back, so not a single one of his claims could ever be verified. You'd have thought that if a single Stuka with 37mm cannon pods (not to mention the kills claimed by the rest of his squadron) had killed 500 Red Army tanks, the Soviets would at least have internally acknowledged this, and made some effort to come up with a similar platform (they experimented with 3.7cm cannons on the Il-2 at an earlier stage, but quickly came to the conclusion it was utter rubbish). Neither of these things ever happened.

Rudel died after suffering another stroke in Rosenheim on 18 December 1982,[40] and was buried in Dornhausen on 22 December 1982. During Rudel's burial ceremony, two Bundeswehr F-4 Phantoms appeared to make a low altitude flypast over his grave. Although Dornhausen was situated in the middle of a flightpath regularly flown by military aircraft, Bundeswehr officers denied deliberately flying aircraft over the funeral. Four mourners were photographed giving Nazi salutes at the funeral, and were investigated under a law banning the display of Nazi symbols. The Federal Minister of Defense Manfred Wörner declared that the flight of the aircraft had been a normal training exercise

But the fact is that the role it was designed for was obsolete when it entered service, and it's spent the past decades being shoehorned into other roles, while performing worse in combat than other fighters. It literally had to be pulled back from the hottest areas during the gulf war because it was taking too much damage, and they gave its missions to the F-16s and 18s.

Something's iffy about this thread, making it sound like Rudel set off on 500 solo flights. To the best of my knowledge the default minimum was four planes flying in a schwarme, attacking targets together. And also the Germans, like the English, preferably gave out medals based on the witness reports of superior officers. For most part of the war the giving out of medals was downright stingy; I believe it got more out of hand somewhere in 1944 but it may have been because so many of the remaining forces were so often in combat.
