Gas plug is a must. I've got one in mine that I can switch between and it definitely is nice being able to shoot hot .30-06 through it.

are trying to say is that you need to buy M1 Garand rated ammo for it. If you shoot the newer ammo with faster burning powder, or a Heavier bullet you can bend your operating rod. Privi Partizan, Seller & Bellot, American Eagle, and Hornaday all make new ammo for this. Or shoot the older Military Lake City ammo. BTW anything with a pre 1953 Headstamp on the case has corrosive primers. Not the end of the world, but you Must clean it immediately after shooting to avoid a pitted bore/barrel. Olongapo Outfitters make cool stock/belt/or chest rigs for the en block clips

Weeeelllll, there's 2 types of plugs right now.
The schuster screw type plug requires some setting for specific loads, but will be more precise and on lowest setting, the garand will not cycle, so it'll be the most gentle on the gun in regards to using higher pressure loads.

The ported variety basically enlarges the gas port, which softens the action and you just plug it in and no further adjustments needed. But i wouldn't feed it a steady diet of the hotter stuff.


Also, the main thing with the ammo is the powder, not so much the size/grain of the bullet, but most modern 30-06 will be loaded with the quicker burning powder anyways. Although I've had instances of the longer 180 grain bullets catching

My Garand does not like modern repro clips. It has no issues with original surplus clips so I pay a premium for those.
You don't need an adjustable gas plug, Garand safe ammo is the among cheapest of the market for .30-06 and really easy to handload for. Prvi, Federal and Sellier & Bellot all make ammo specifically for the Garand on top of surplus M2 Ball still around. Greek surplus is about to dry up (my guess is the CMP will run out by year end) but there is some Korean floating about as well (granted Korean surplus should be treated as corrosive).

I own property to shoot, but that's because I live in a place where I could buy 20 acres for 18 grand and pay almost no taxes and have the money to do so. If I made 20 or 30k less every year I would never own it, for someone who shoots once a month in a state with lots of public land it relly doesn't make sense. Especially since last time I went out I got yelled at by hikers for shooting in "our" forest. Literally in my future back yard that I own outright calling the forest service on me.
