Picked up a 6" stainless Ruger Security Six for $450 plus a couple hundred rounds of .357 and .38 ammo.

How'd I do? It's my first handgun. Pic is not mine but just like it.
>>
>>34103621
you did good.
now get to the range and get comfortable with it.
>>
>>34103621
$450 is a really good price for a Security Six, not to mention the ammo. Just make sure the ammo isn't reloads.
>>
>>34103631
Took it to the range yesterday and also spend today killing snakes on my buddy's land.

>>34103642
What's wrong with reloads?
>>
>>34103621
you did good pig...you did good.
>>
>>34103657
>What's wrong with reloads?
you don't know how good he is at it (they could be shitty, inconsistent or downright dangerous), plus it's technically illegal for him to sell them
>>
>>34103657
>What's wrong with reloads?
Most people, myself included tend not to trust other peoples reloads.

I got some .357 reloads in a trade once, didn't even know they were reloads until I took the first shot. They were loaded so hot it split the brass. Luckily I was putting it through a Ruger, so the gun was fine, but after inspecting the rest of the rounds, I noticed they were all mixed headstamps.

I pulled the bullets and found they were fucking compressed loads.
>>
You got a good deal. The Security Six is a great revolver, because it is the size of a K-frame but doesn't have the structural and mechanical weakness of the K-frame. In fact, it is retardedly strong and durable.

As an additional note, the reason it was discontinued was not because it wasn't popular--Ruger actually sold over 1.5 million of them--but because the GP100 was cheaper to make. Bill Ruger actually said in an interview that his company basically only broke even on the Security Six despite the huge number of them that they sold.
>>
On a related note, what's the largest animal you'd trust a .357 to take down?
>>
>>34103760
black wisconsinite.

for something less hairy, deer or cougar.
maaaaybe black bear.
>>
>>34103760
No hunting experience myself, but I know people commonly hunt deer with .357 out of revolvers and lever guns. I couldn't imaging going much larger than that reliably.
>>
>>34103760
.357 has basically identical ballistics to 10mm. Anything that a 10mm can handle can also be handled by a .357 Magnum. That being said,

Easy: Deer, Black Bear
Possible with good shot placement: Moose, Brown Bear
>>
>>34103621
That's a pretty decent deal, they're good workhorses.

>>34103657
Mystery reloads is generally not a good idea.
Even remanufactured ammo is a bit questionable, I hear lots of horror stories from those kinds of brands.

That said, if you get into handloading on your own, you can reload .357 for fucking dimes.
Also if you're gonna shoot a lot of .38's, make sure to pay special attention to the chambers when it's time to clean your gun, there can be a bit of buildup due to the shorter case, in particular with unjacketed bullets.

>>34103704
>In fact, it is retardedly strong and durable.
Investment casting stronk!
>>
>>34104074
>.357 has basically identical ballistics to 10mm
That's a pretty crude way of putting it.

Some 10mm loads can be compared to some .357 loads, but you can load .357 really incredibly stout (especially in something like a Security Six)
>>
>>34103760
Depends on the barrel length (think 4" revolver vs 16" lever action), but I'd trust it with everything up to black bear with good shot placement. Larger game like elk, moose, and brown bear are also possible as I'm sure there are those out there that do it, but I personally wouldn't try it.
>>
>>34103621
Does yours have a 32SW barrel on it like the last guy that posted on here after he bought one?
>>
>>34108948
I didn't know they made the Security Six in any caliber but .357
>>
>>34109042
38 SW, 38 SPL, 357, 9mm.
The cylinders are all interchangeable from the whole Six line. Anon bought a 357 stamped security six a couple weeks ago and found out it wouldn't chamber 357 or even 38 sp. Turned out it had a 38 SW cylinder in it which is basically useless.
>>
>>34109079
Well that's kind of odd.

Do you have a link to it in an archive or something?

You got the wrong security 6.
>>
>>34109158
No link and I couldn't find the thread. They made a bunch of these guns in 38SW for India Police and some south american countries. That's where his cylinder came from.
>>
>>34109168
Stainless with synthetic is aesthetic by the way of utility.

>>34109232
Lol, wonder how the fuck that shit walked it's way to the US?
Must last fucking forever in .38 Smith & Wesson though.

I recently got a 4in blued Security Six for a little over 400 after taxes. Sadly I had to take it back the next day when I discovered that the cylinder had been sleeved to some random fudd caliber. I really want a .357 but I'm poor and all I can ever find are .38s.

>>34108948
It was marked as a .357 and sold as a .357. Even the guys at the shop were surprised when I brought it back in.
>>
>>34109422
What caliber?
>>
I have the same, just blued. I had bad luck with Herters .357. The rims were too thick and caused the cylinder to bind. No other ammo did it.

I think the general consensus at the end of the thread was .38S&W. .357, .38Spc, and 9mm wouldn't fit, and it was an original barrel.
>>
>>34109456
>>34109422
Yep, that's the one I'm talking about.

They let you take it back? Most of these places are a no-returns kind of operation.

I have one that's in outstanding condition and I wouldn't pay more that $100 for it.

Yea that's what I was afraid of, but luckily they have a 30 day policy for used guns. It's to protect against stuff like unknown user modifications and safety issues. They were very friendly and apologetic and I got all my money back.

So yea, if you are in Dallas check out GT Distributors, they are a great shop. They mostly deal with cop stuff, but they have a diverse long arms selection and reasonably priced used guns.

OP here

This may be kind of a stupid question, but I clean my other guns with CLP, any reason I should use anything different for this?
>>
>>34110469
Not really. Though you'll want to be more careful with your application if you use grease on other parts since revolvers are more open and you don't want to the two mixing.
>>
>>34109253
38s&w was a us police round for a long time. Now its mostly a cowboy action round.
>>
>>34109422
Should have kept it and started looking for a .357 cylinder.
>>
>>34111018
Yeah but .38 S&W fell out of use in the US *decades* before the Security Six.

99% of all .38 S&W revolvers in the US exist either as relics from before the .38 Special, or as special orders and custom jobs, the idea of a Security Six in this caliber, in the US, is really quite bizarre, if you think about it.
>>
>>34111051
Then you might as well have bought an all new gun, how often do you stumble upon spare parts or a broken down Security Six to cannibalize? They don't bite the dust easily.

I'd almost say it'd make better sense to have a gunsmith ream the chambers of the cylinder, because it's almost certainly done on the exact same tooling and castings as the the regular .357 Magnum cylinders, just finished differently.
