when you get awarded a medal, the medal has a ribbon attached to it. most take time to get pushed through s-1 and what not, but are typically awarded on a company or battalion level based on merit of said award. the MoH (medal of honor/blue ribbon) has to be investigated by the division and approved by congress before it gets awarded. the MoH, being the highest medal of merit for a member in the armed forces, is awarded by the president to the recipient or the next of kin.

all awards have to go through some bureaucratic bullshit before they are given to the recipient. some awards though get delayed due to the actions taken by the recipient are awarded by a member of the elite ranking. i knew an nco that got his arcom with v device delayed because his plt was recognized by general patraeus. it all depends really. i think maj winters didn't receive his silver star from breacourt until like a month later whereas some dudes get an aam from the unit at the end of a training exercise.

The Manchurian Candidate taught me that it's as simple as a commanding officer recommending a medal and the recommendation gets passed up the chain and reviewed. Captains never get medals because they can't recommend themselves.

awards you're referring to are usually given posthumously. sometimes they might push paperwork for shit like a purple heart through in a day and other times they might award the recipient before they get signed off on.

All medals have corresponding ribbons. Some awards are only ribbons though. Nothing is awarded at platoon level, since award citations have to go through S1. The Good Conduct Medal is automatically awarded after 3 years of service if you don't have any serious disciplinary issues within that time.

Anyways medals and awards are all politics and paperwork. Things that are automatic like your Good Conduct can still get lost or they can spite you about it (I got my awarded in the bathroom during a piss test).

I was never awarded mine
or the AAM I was supposed to get.
One of the Specialists I was friends with in HQ platoon told me all of us guys getting out around the same time were supposed to have a ceremony where we would all be awarded these two medals. The documents were made out, they were signed, and medals were in the office. They never awarded them to any of us.
I was also cheated out of my CAB because after the commander got his, he stopped caring (he also stopped going out on missions).
Our chain of command was shit and did not care about rewarding soldiers, only themselves, because I assure you, all those asshats got their Bronze Stars.

Fucked if anyone knows. There are people who should have got recognition for shit they did - who didn't, and there are people who didn't do shit but got a medal out of it. 99% of it is politics. Don't judge someone because of their ribbon rack.
