I have never hunted anything larger than vermin and I am still relatively new to the gun world. I was curious if it's possible to hunt bigger game, deer, elk, etc, with something like a Mosin-Nagant or a Gewehr 98? I honestly don't know what caliber rifles are ideal for hunting bigger game, other than the .308 which is just what people tell me.

Yes, both 7.62x54R and 8x57IS are more than adequate for larger game.
Hit the lungs/heart of your target and youre fine.
Yes, but nugget hunting gets old very fast. Get something decent if (and only if) you decide to get into hunting.

why does it get old?

But make sure you use soft point ammunition. FMJ is illegal to use for hunting.

Different guy but i hunt with my mosin often. If youre going to be walkibg and movibg through the woods that weight gets to be a lot. And the trigger pull can be a real nigger when trying to make accurate shots with your adrenaline pumping.
Get a ruger american rifle in 308 theyre sub 300 goodboy points and very light comparatively.

A good 240gr soft point.
>>34097302
OP here, why is FMJ illegal? I feel like soft point is just more damaging than an FMJ would be. sorry if dumb question, again relatively new to this.
>>34097405
Exactly. A soft nose bullet expands causing additional shock and tissue damage resulting in a quicker, more humane death (generally speaking of course... shooting it in the leg is bad news no matter what type of ammo you're using)
>>34097405
Soft point will transfer more energy and give you a cleaner kill. Fmj will penetrate a bit too well and might not give you an ethical kill. It's also safer/less likely to hit a human after going through a deer or branches or whatever.

>why is FMJ illegal?
Depends on the State hunting regulations (if you're in the US). There's sort of a meme that it's more humane to use an expanding projectile to shoot an animal because it will usually cause more grievous wounds, and thus kill the animal more quickly.

You find that rifle?
>>34098819
Not that anon but one of my buddies has a 700 that he just lets sit in the bed of his truck. Looks a little bit fresher than that but it's definitely on its way.

Possible but not ideal. Just buy a proper hunting rifle instead. It'll be cheaper and perform better.
My K31 is my go-to rifle for deer. But I'll be taking my VZ24 out at least once this next season
>>34098832
Geez, hope he doesn't have to shoot it in the future if he keeps it there.
>>34097405
It depends on where you live.
PPU/Partizan makes soft point hunting ammo for 7.62x54R and 8mm måuser.
>>34097302
Not everywhere. NC fag here, and FMJ hunting is perfectly legal here
>>34096951
Read what this guy said
>>34098878
It's doable but if you're new to hunting i would recommend against using any military surplus rifle for hunting. Just get a modern hunting rifle in .308 and you're set. It will be inexpensive, easy to use, effective, and have easy to find ammunition.

Did you dig that thing up? Anybody who does that to a firearm doesn't deserve to own one.

Rule of thumb OP, if it'll stop a 180-lbs man, it'l stop a 180-lbs. buck
