It's amusing that all of you picked the 1911. It has 2 more shots if carried with 7+1 and much faster reloads, but, in exchange, forces you to contend with both a grip safety and manual safety, is not drop safe, and is nowhere near as reliable (remember that the guns being compared are an antique 1911 and a revolver and not a G19 vs. a revolver).

I personally would gladly take the Model 10, or, if I had a choice, a Model 27 or 28.

Yeah, a lot of people were under the impression that .45 ACP was inherently more powerful because of its larger bore size, but 9×19 shits all over .38 Special and they would have known about the difference in muzzle energy.

In fairness, .45ACP is more powerful than 9mm, especially in the 1950s. You'd be limited to FMJs which is the one time .45 actually can outperform. Is this worth giving up 5 rounds to a Hi-Power? Probably not. But if you compare it to a single stack 9mm like the Luger or P38/P1 then it does objectively outperform.

They weren't really imported into the US. Beyond that, 9mm was notoriously unreliable because it wasn't standardized between countries yet. A lot of 9mm was underpowered and/or out of spec.
