If there are any engineers on /k/ question:
How much can a light gas gun be scaled down
just make the parts smaller dumbo
>>34076395
Like this
>>34076441
>>34076488
do either of you know what a light gas gun is?
>>34076395
How do you reset it?
>>34076535
that's part of why i'm asking is it can be scaled down significantly
>>34076558
with what? hydrogen?
just make a propane spud gun
>>34076535
Not OP, but obviously hydrogen, and I'm thinking (Just from reading the wikipedia on them) that you'd have to scale the entire process down to a cartridge size apparatus to make a self-loading small arm version, dunno how suuuuper hard that'd be or not, or how much velocity gain on what prjectiles would even be worth it at that scale.

Rather than trying to contain the whole apparatus in one cartridge you could probably have a reloadable propellant blank fed from a magazine along with a second cartridge that contains the rupture disc / projectile.
Tank of helium in the stock charges the tube.
The real issue isn't so much that it can't be done. It's just not worth the complexity or ammunition cost.

As an engineering major, im not so sure part 4 is necessary
And without it, you just have a regular gas operated gun
>>34080014
that's a piston used to compress the light gas (hydrogen/helium) to achieve higher velocities because the speed of sound is higher in lighter gasses
>>34080221
Hmm...
Well, id say >>34078748 is probably the best bet. It would make sure the piston wont wear out quickly because youd only use it once
It would have to be a pretty long cartridge though, like 5.56x100 or something. And then why not just have a regular gas propelled 5.56x100
>>34080455
>why not just have a regular gas propelled 5.56x100
light gas guns produce muzzle velocities of several kilometer per second
Yeah probably having the whole thing contained in a single cartridge would be the way to go, everything else would just be so goddamn complicated. Now would it be worth it? Hell no, those would be some big ass cartridges.

Goodbye rifling.

Combustion light gas guns could get pretty small. Hydrogen is nice for the high speed of sound, but methane is
>>34081592
>>34081592
fuck.
but methane is much more practical when it comes to storage and lacks the problem of hydrogen embrittlement.
