What was the best overall tank in the world at the outbreak of WW2 (when Germany invaded Poland)?

The Panzer III, followed in Sept 1940 (exactly one year after invasion of Pooland) by the T-34

The Polish 7TP was one of 1939's best designs, and were capable of killing everything the Germans had to include the PzIV. Unfortunately, they didn't have nearly enough of them when the war began.

One of the best designs in 1932, maybe.

Those Vickers based designs (T-26, 7TP) were great if you couldn't afford other anything more complicated and needed a dirt simple vehicle you could build and maintain with a just a hammer.

Otherwise they were well on the way to being obsolete by 1939.

You know the KV series was going in right?
It didn't have a very effective gun at that point, but it also had 90mm forward armor and a MUCH better silhouette.

That, and the big gun was turret mounted.

Dunno why you're forcing the Char so hard.

I would actually go with the Somua S-35. I'm not an expert on French tanks, but as far as I know:
>better mobility than a Char
>a gun that could defeat any German AFV at normal combat ranges
>armor that can handle return fire of any German AFV off the top of my head
>hard to build, but still better than the Char
>turret that burdened the commander, but the radio operator could at least help a little
When you consider how the campaign actually went down, and what else was used in France, the Somua was the best fit to French needs.

The idea of any sort of """Pure""" """German""" """Race""" is a joke.

This is well known.
That the nationally-Germanic people should have been so successful absorbing and re-purposing their neighbors however, is simply the sign of an effective society and strong culture.

It's a bit like the United States, except they were doing the opposite of immigration to grow their population.

I don't have any negative comments to make on this.

If it's there, might as well use it.

Picture is Alfred Becker. Becker spent the war in France, combing the graveyards and beaches for Anglo and French equipment. He built hundreds of restored French and British vehicles with a German gun and optics strapped on them, which was sent to Rommel, who was enamored by the equipment. Rommel presented Becker and his work to Hitler, who was just as impressed and ordered two full divisions worth of repurposed armour. Which he accomplished.

Actually this.
S35 was definetly one of the best tanks of it's class around the early stages of the war, although it's major drawback was one it shared with most French tanks in that it was incredibly undercrewed.

The Panzer 3 was the most modern tank but the 3.7cm was already obsolete in 1939.
If it had a bigger turret ring it would have been superior to the IV in almost every way.

I'd probably go with the KV-1 if it was already in service during the start of the Poland invasion.

Skoda LT-35 was obsolete by the time that the war began. Germany just confiscated quite a number of them, so why not throw them at the enemy. There was even plan to update the older LT-34 (by Praga) to specs that would surpass it. But instead government went with LT-38 (also Praga). There was also plan for the medium tank (panzer killer) that went through the testing stages, but the opposition was undermining the process by shilling for Skoda T-21 (Turan) and then Munich happened, generals cancelled the order, and Skoda design got later sold to the Hungary.
>>
>>34073970

>>
>>34074454

All you have to do to use any gun as indirect artillery is to know where and at what angle to point the gun. You can either arrive at these numbers by doing the math yourself or by using a ballistic computer which will do the math for you, like a pocket calculator does.

if we are talking light tanks im going to have to go with the Strv m/39. Low weight of 9 tons, a pretty good gun for its time one of the first tanks to be produced with torison bar suspension, fully welded armor, roomy interior. Armor was only meant to stop MG fire (8-15mm thick) but it was later upgraded with applique armor which increased the front to 50mm.

This video has fottage of the m/39 and its earlier m/38 brother (it has the flat turret front) in a d
demonstration of how a attack would be preformed by a swedish an armored battalion

A trained crew could have a Flak 88 set up in two minutes.
