Alright /k/, I have aquired a side by side 12ga and I would like to value it. It seems pretty old but only has one big mark down the barrel, of which is Damascus steel.

Man, that's a real nice pattern. Too bad about that scuff mark. No idea what it's worth though.
>>
>>34062475
Is there any indication of who made the gun? Because of the ding in the barrel it is unshootable which drops the value but it is sill a neat looking shotgun.
>>
>>34062512
I have yet to find any symbols on the than the safety, I don't know if they were rubbed off or never got put on for some reason
>>
>>34062542
Is there anything inside of the action or on the trigger guard? My guess is that is a very old custom gun. Do you have a close up pic of the side plates?
>>
>>34062512
The barrel ding may not be that big a deal. Twisted steel barrels shouldn't be used with anything but black powder loads anyway, and the low pressures generated by bp don't put nearly as much stress on deformations as smokeless powder would. I'd still take it by a gun smith with experience dealing with fowling pieces, though.

Post more pictures, particularly of the stock and the trigger mechanism if you can. Also tell us where you got it. At initial glance, I think it might actually be home made based on the looks of the barrel and the lack of markings, but that's just a thought.
You should absolutely take it to a Gunsmith to get that bloom in the barrel looked at, and definitely don't shoot it until you do that. I doubt the gun has much commercial value, but it's a fine looking gun and it would be a great wall piece. Mount it on your mantlepiece or something if it turns out that damage is serious.
>>
Pull the barrels off and see if there are any markings on the underside of the chamber.
>>34062483
If the maker is collectible enough, it may pay off to take it to a gunsmith and have him fix it.
>>34062475
Your generic wall hanger shotgun varies in prices. My guess is anywhere from $100-300 but if it is a collectible brand it can go up.

Ah ha! It appears to say L.C. Smith
>>
>>34062597
absolutely this. plus, the gunsmith may be able to identify it - or at least make it look really, really nice.
certainly doesn't seem like a large-production shotgun given the fact that the barrel break lever isn't centered - it's not a model 21, at least.
>>
>>34062582
>Twisted steel barrels shouldn't be used with anything but black powder loads anyway, and the low pressures generated by bp don't put nearly as much stress on deformations as smokeless powder would.
True, and even some low pressure ammo you can buy off the shelf should be fine. It's still a bit concerning when old barrells like that have a dent in them.

>>34062591
Is that engraving or just a result of the pic being blurry? If the engraving survived then a maker's mark could have.

Still have a gunsmith check it before shooting it. Especially knowing that it is an LC Smith.

>>
>>34062604
Oh boy, you dun lucked out. Give us some better pictures and tell us how long the barrel is. Most L.C Smith Break actions go for $5-6k, some close to $15k.
Do NOT sell this. It's a collectors item, it will never go down in value. Take it to a Gunsmith as soon as you can, last thing you want to do is ruin a ten grand shotgun by shooting it with a damaged barrel.
>>
>>34062635
also, if you can have it fixed, have it fixed, but for the love of christ, if you can help it:
>do NOT replace parts
>do NOT replace parts
>do NOT replace parts
a collector will pay more for a full-original fucked up gun than a working non-original one.

>>
>>34062632
Good. I think it may be a Quality No.3 gun based on the barrels, engraving, and stock. If you can get the numbers you can get a year made. This is one hell of a barn find, I'm jelly.

All you need to know is that they are very good shotguns and there is a large collectors base for them. They are not my wheel house for shotguns (I prefer European Shotguns, St Etienne is my target).

If you still have quesitons about the gun after this thread dies, try asking at the LC Smith collectors society.

Could be made to order? I don't know. There's a second result for the same serial number in 1899, so maybe it's actually turn of the century?

OP, can you give us a picture of the Hammer?

Shotgun purists. The blackpowder age still lives on in the sporting shotgun world.
>>
>>34062695
>so maybe it's actually turn of the century?
Around that time the company introduced a "0" grade which would have been stamped underneath the serial number so it would make sense.
>>
>>34062682
It has been fired and treated poorly enough that is might have become off face. Shimming it is a lazy way of "correcting" the issue.
Like it has been sad a few times in the thread, take it to a gunsmith. Make sure it is a good one, not just some guy who mounts scopes and assembles AR-15s.

that doesn't seem to be consistent with the (now ruined) embellishments on the lockplate, at least on the left side - not even mentioning the barrels.

Hanguard comes off first. Little lever on the bottom usually. then carefully break it open and the barrel should tip off.

LC Smith Quality 2 black powder shotgun, and you need to slap your granddaddy because he's treated this gun like shit, you can see where the decal has been worn away.
This gun in particular seems to have been among the later batches of the guns made, the 1899 manufacture date seems to be correct, it was probably one of the last ones made.

I honestly don't think you'd get that much for it at market, it's pretty damn beat up. Still a lovely gun, try and get it cleaned up without replacing parts if at all possible.

>that doesn't seem to be consistent with the (now ruined) embellishments on the lock plate, at least on the left side - not even mentioning the barrels.
I'm just going off of what I'm reading online. I know the company starting making "0"s around that time and stamped the grade below the serial number and they had the same kind of barrels with little to no engraving. It was a basic shotgun.

Take a look at this too, scroll down to No. 0

Easy mistake. 1901 manufacture date by the looks of it.

Good news, it's a great collectors item, and it's a great gun. Bad news, it's in such bad shape it's probably not worth much. I'd keep it, just for history's sake. You could probably get $600-$1000 for it, but that honestly doesn't justify the sale for a family heirloom in my opinion.
>>
>>34062826
would definitely be worth getting cleaned up though, barrel deformation and all.
at least she's all numbers matching.
>>
>>34062826
It will stay on my mantle for as long as I can keep it there.

Thanks for the help guys, if you want any more pictures let me know
>>
>>34062803
That would make it a 1901. Based on the 0 beneath the serial number I would say it is a No. 0 model which would be consistent with the barrels, stock, and lack of engraving on the plates. It was LC Smith's "economy" model.

Keep it in the family anon, that is a great barn find.
