Where to cop a quality greathelm without breaking the bank? Current events notwithstanding, I wanted one since I was a young lad reading tales about Richard and the moslems.

You can get plenty of cheaper helms for a couple hundred dollars and they'll protect your nogin, but they might not fit right.

Check eBay. I got mine there for $50.
>>
>>34047113
What is your budget, and what is your specific purpose? If its just costume, you can get a nice repro in 16g mild steel. If you want combat weight for ACL/SCA etc, then you'll be looking at a good deal more.

There is no shame is just wanting a nice display/costume piece.

It's $50.00 dollars Mr. Clown, he should count himself fortunate that it fits on his head.
>>
>>34047175
They won't fit right

I got a gallic Roman Centurion helmet they sold a while back for 120 dollarinoo's when Rome 2 was announced and it won't fit my fucking head. As in, there's way too much room leftover.

Idk how you're meant to wear it, but it's pretty /fa/ with the red plume.
>>
>>34047210
None taken. I bought it for a shitty Halloween costume years ago.
>>
I never thought of buying one of these

Thanks OP
>>
>>34047241
Hey man, you'd be amazed what you can find for that price if you're willing to dig. I got a damn decent 18g mild morion for my 16thC Irish living history kit for $45 off amazon.
>>
How uncomfortable are these things? Do they have liners?
>>
>>34047300
Depends on where you get it. Mine didn't, so I had to make one.
>>
>>34047113
you do know the best one is two helmets and a vest right ?
>>
>>34047300
True great helms are not meant to be worn alone, but over another helmet (linguistically, the diminutive of "helm"). Breathing and vision are crap, but the point is to use the greathelm on the initial charge, and then remove it to wear the smaller pot helm/bacinet and coif underneath.

Some helms of similar design exist to be worn alone (Sugarloaf, pembrook, topfhelm, saltshaker). Very rarely will a commercial collectable come with padding or suspension, much less proper a proper one. Sports combat helms almost never do unless you pay extra.

It all depends on your budget and the actual use of the helm

What?

Tripfags are going to fag.

>>34047198
I was thinking around $150 or less. If it's not going to be at all functional at that price point, I'll just cheap out on a decent looking costume piece.

Does that $150 include shipping? Honestly, if its just a costume piece, go with something like these. Fairly well built for light contact reenacting, and pre lined for you.

Thanks for the links, now show me the real steel you would buy for full contact, if you don't mind. Trying to figure out the price difference
>>
>>34047823
>Trying to figure out the price difference
Its going to be exponential. Personally, I never use a mild steel. All my stuff is stainless or spring-stainless.

I will also assume you still want early medieval greathelms. This is a start.

Aren't you supposed to wear a felt or leather cap underneath it to fill in the gap? Or is there room past that as well?
>>
>>34047956
More likely a quilted or knit liner.
>>
>>34047926
Yeah, that is quite a gulf. I'll probably spring for a cult of athena piece.
>>
>>34047992
The KoA helms are not bad, and are still decent brands and decent construction. I even know guys who use the GDFB one for SCA baton combat, though they are getting minor dents.

My first custom fit bucket was around $400 a decade ago, and my fancy helm in >>34047620 is in the four-figure range, for comparison.
>>
>>34047113
How did the lads wear helmets back in the day?
Meaning, what sort of padding/stuffing/straps did they use to keep them in place?

Other than face protection, is there a reason to not just wear a padded coif and chain?

Quilted liners and coifs were most common, followed by suspension or knit/felted liners.

>is there a reason to not just wear a padded coif and chain?

Really depends on the period, type of helm(et) and your function/budget as a soldier.

Like modern helmets, but using leather or woven textile strips to create a tension and thus, hold the helm in place. This is used in place of a liner, and usually in conjunction with a coif.
>>
>>34048035
Do you have experience with KoA's swords? If so, how are there Gladii? I have also wanted one of those since my days of playing Rome: Total War with my little bro. I have heard good things about them, I think I might get my brother one for his birthday this summer.
>>
>>34048252
I stack them on top of each other or carry them by their hole.
>>
>>34048287
>Do you have experience with KoA's swords? If so, how are there Gladii?

KoA doesn't make anything, and they carry many different brands. Everything from cheap stainless paki wallhangers, to $3000 Albion Arms swords that are 99.99% reconstructions.

What period, and whats your budget?
>>
>>34048302
Any gladius that will hold an edge, my brother isn't really into quality, as long as it looks cool, he's happy. Lets's say around $120 or so before shipping. Just no Coldsteel.
>>
>>34048327
Anything that says 'Battle Ready' on it and doesn't say Depeeka.
>>
>>34048327
Most Deepeeka blades will suffice. they are a little overbuilt and heavy (almost two fucking pounds!), but they use decent steel and take a good edge if you try. He can swing it just fine and not worry about warping or breaking the blade.

Buzzwords. Say no.

After the $100 pricepoint, they are acceptable as causal collectables for people who are going to dick around with them. Tough, heavy boat anchors. He's not looking for living history grade repos.
