OP take some advice from a long time carnie. Dont ever fucking stay at rest stops. Its the worst place for many reasons to stay in your car. Safest bet all around if you dont want to pay for a hotel is walmart parking lot.

I stay here regularly when I have to sleep in my truck. Sleep in the back seat (or front of your center console folds up) with a bag on the floor on your head side. Keep your gun on top of it. Since mkst back windows are tinted any employees passing buy will assume you are a shopper. And police will assume your car is an employees so dont worry. And park under a light post near the store but away from the doors. Like in front of the garden section. Criminals usually wont take the risk since its well lit and there are cameras

500 miles is peanuts. I used to do Denver to St. Louis when I lived there and that was 850 miles. If you start early, you can do that length drive during a summer day and finish before it gets dark.

Ocean Springs is probably the nicest place in Mississippi, and it has some decent restaurants. Phoenicia's has fantastic chicken schwarma. Anthony's (next to ft. Bayou bridge) is good too.

Biloxi is also kinda neat. The half shell oyster house is fantastic, and all of the casinos have really good fine dining.

In Di'iberville the promenade has a lot of really good options: Chik Fil A, Newks, Moes, Five Guys, Aristos, and Subway are all there.

As far as gun ranges, on the coast there's a few good options.

Gun Ho in Bay St Louis is a cool indoor range with a 50 yd pistol and 100yd rifle. If you go north of di'iberville there's tbe coast rifle club (fantastic but expensive, also at least one absolute fudd rso "we don't like black rifles here they cause probalehms.") and the mchenry shooting range, which is nice but also has shitty rules.
