Probably the best idea so far. A magwell insert could house the spring and follower, allowing enblocs to just ping out the top. Meaning you could use a standard AR lower with your special Garand-style upper.

Now the challenge is making it for around $500.

For Civillian rifles en blocs make a lot of sense as do stripper clips.
You could even sell the ammo packed on clips for fairly cheap.
Remove wrapper and go.
