this is a common weakness in the design, there was actually a lawsuit against thompson center from a guy who lost his eye by a nipple that shot into his face.

yes over tightening can destroy the theads. also corrosion and rust, did you buy the gun used or new? i inspect the threads carefully on mine every cleaning, the threads on the gun and the nipple

if you spot pitting or rust, its time to stop


be grateful you didnt lose an eye to a flying nipple, always shoot with eye protection

you cant rethread to the same diameter if material is missing. you would have to have a larger nipple diameter, or add metal material to the barrel somehow then drill it out and thread to correct specs. this is something a gunsmith should do if you are not mechanically inclined, which judging by OPs retardation of shooting a caplock with a spinning loose nipple, seems to be the case

Whelp, I will look into rethreading, but I guess the only thing to do is buy a new nipple.and see what happens.

I got it second hand and this is maybe my 7th time shooting it. I am not an expert on muzzleloaders, so I didn't know if that was bad or not.


In anycase, I was shooting at and old czech steel helmet, here is what the .22 did to it.

whenever buying used caplocks the threads are the first thing that need inspection. real black powder is corrosive, if previous owners neglected the gun and didnt clean properly, the threads are often rusted and corroded, and therefore weak

I think you overestimate the power of 22lr, it's just a step above a 22cal break barrel pellet rifle.
22lr an penetration don't go together, and for the most part, handguns in general too.
