Fuck it, the entire '96 action is shit compared to a Mosin action with the exception of the magazine system (and even that is shoddy compared to later Mausers)
The magazine is inferior, but it's as a result of the rimmed rounds and not the magazine design itself.
I believe that if coupled with a nicer, longer bolt handle, and a rimless round, alongside much better barrels and free floating, the Mosin Nagant would have been a wonderful equal to the Mauser system.
The Finns agreed with me on the free floating part.
The magazine was the result of idiotic Russian nationalism. The rest of the gun is Belgian.

However as we have seen, a good barrel, free floating, and a good magazine and build quality goes a long way in improving a firearm.
A Mosin with those improvements would be a nice alternative to a Mauser style action.

There is literally nothing the 98 barrel and magazine does better than the Swede 96 and cock on close is just your personal preference.
