Roarke's Drift aka Zulu

Impressive because it was just a little more than a company of men at an outpost that served as supply station and field hospital, hastily fortified with meal bags in a defensive perimeter and all walking wounded handed a rifle and told to take up posts, fighting off a force of 3-4k negros with spears and cowhide shields.

They were eventually overrun, the fighting descending into close quarters bayonet and spear combat inside the hospital, but the attack repelled. In just ONE day, around 19k rounds of .577-450 Martini Henry rounds fired by a bit over 150 men, must have been an impressive sight to see

The rebel samurai made use of muskets and artillery. They put up a good fight for being outnumbered 60 to 1 and managed to hold the attackers back for a reasonable amount of time until Saigo himself got got. I'd put their defeat more to being massively outnumbered with no chance of escape than to their choice of weaponry.

Shogun 2 Total War Modder here.
This screenshot shown over here is a deliberate set-up Custom Battle between 19th Century Army from Fall of The Samurai Expansion Pack versus 16th Century Chosokabe Clan from the main Shogun 2 Campaign.
As for why the Riflemen throw his bayoneted rifle, we got to start to the beginning: SEGA forced CA to release things on a yearly schedule, ASAP. This means CA, the developer, need to cut some features. Retardedly, one of the features cut is bayonet melee animation - the result is all Modernized units fight with Sabres and Katana instead of using Bayonet. Modders aware that CA hid Bayoneted Rifle models inside the game packs, and tries to mod those back in. But which animation should be used for the Bayoneted Rifle melee? There is no way for modders to mod in new mo-capped synchronized animations into Shogun 2. So, they simply used the already-available Yari spear animation set for Modern Infantry melee animation. Now, one of the rare synchronized kill-animation included in the Yari animation set is the spear throw, so...well, here you go.
