China is less one country and more a metric shit ton of countries trying to keep a unified face.

China has won tons of wars but they were all against themselves. China isn't really a country unless they have an external enemy that can distract/keep them focused.

For the most part, they either stalemated or won all their modern wars. Obviously WW2 was a bail out. Vietnam war they acted as air support. Soviet border conflict was short lived but China won.

Ancient China, lot of the Mongolian invasion can thank the Han defectors within the Song dynasty at the time for the defeats against them. Most of the wars China had were either expansions, dealing with local warlords, or civil wars.

Actually the japan and korean wars were more of a stalemate even if they took loads of casualties.

Mostly because they pushed hard as fuck and managed to take some ground in both the later part of WW2 (with American special forces, air support, and weapons no less) even besieging the japanese on the coastal cities near the end of the war. And the initial Chinese offensive was brutal as fuck for all parties involved, and us Americans got pushed back before we set up the meatgrinder with our heavy weapons and reinforcements to hold them.

China had very few wars of expansion outside of the Sinosphere. One time, they had India at their mercy after beating the crap of them in the Himalayas but then Mao refused to advance and even ceded most of the conquered regions. This is because China is averse to ruling over non-Chinese. It's all they could do to contain the Uighuyrs, Tibetans and other ethnic minorities. And to address your second point, 21st century "warfare" is something we won't know the nuances of until it's declassified and studied 100 years from now. China is for sure protecting it's own interests, while building it's military without the excess cost of R&D, because they play catchup by stealing and copying designs.
