I'm in a program for delayed commissioning into the Navy after I graduate next year. Would there be any value in purchasing a M9 and getting in some range time before I head off to OCS next year? I don't have much experience with pistol shooting, but I'd like to be able to earn the marksmanship ribbon and perhaps get expert or sharpshooter.

No, but you should get one anyway because it's a great gun.

shooting in general is a good idea. you could pick up an ar and practice with irons. i'd say picking up a 92 series is a good idea anyway due to the 320 being picked up. might be a lot of surplus mags and parts coming out.
There's no point or reason for swabbies to handle small arms. Your time would be better spent learning how to mop the head and suck Marine dick.

>not buying the superior 92fs

if you don't feel like getting the M9 specifically you could always try the PX4 just for training. it's roughly the same, DA/SA with decocker and the trigger resets for both actions are pretty close to the 92's. also you'd have a different gun, which is always fun.
I thought this was getting replaced? Or is that not for a few years?

I think it is, but I'd imagine they'll still be in use at OCS in a year when I'm there. I'm going into submarines, but I think small arms proficiency is still something you should have as an officer.

No, as a commissioned officer in the boat force your ability to fire small arms is irrelevant. You'll probably shoot one once a year or something for "currency", but your score literally won't matter as long as it's above a baseline set so low that you would have to deliberately shoot at your neighbor's target in order to fail.
You should buy one anyway though, 92FS is a really nice modern all-metal double stack DA/SA, just superb little pistol. I love mine.
Are commercial M9s worth getting, or should I just save up for a 92?

its the same except minor cosmetic changes
>2017
>not having a 92fs
>not wanting them 80s action movie aesthetics
>dust cover: straight or slanted
>backstrap: normal or radiused
>skub: pro or anti
I just did 10 years in the navy. I never shot a handgun, rifle or shotgun aside from when i was in boot camp. I Do however have a lot of time on .50 cals and 249Bs.
