a teenage girl was able to make her own bolt action rifle with a manual milling machine, why can't you?
>>
>>33972807
I would, if I would own a milling machine
>>
>>33972812
buy one, you can pick one up from any closing shops for a few hundred of dollars. I got mine for $200 from crags list, though it needed some work to bring it back to working order, but it's still good and I been making experiment proto types the test theories

She's at least in her 20s.
>>
>>33972862
With the cost of the machine, plus my labor needed to get it to work, plus materials, i might as well just buy one.

Not to mention I don't have the machining expertise to make a quality piece.

Look at her other videos, she scratch builds a revolver, much more impressive.

Also, she was a fitter and turner or something, so no shit she can build guns.

I've built a few bolt action .22lr rifles. Getting a bit better at it. This latest one weighs 32oz scoped including a dozen rounds inside the tubular stock and one in the chamber, a Weaver B4 steel scope from the late 1950's, a suppressor made from 6061 tubing with 7075 alloy end caps and K baffles, and a receiver and bolt made from Home Depot mild steel stock. I was a bit surprised on watching waffen maiden's videos just this evening that her sear function and L slot in the bolt are pretty close to mine, though I use a threaded insert as the guide for that slot so that I'm not riding the sear pin directly when cocking or de-cocking the striker. And I like her little grub screw retaining the firing pin block, but I prefer a neodymium magnetic retainer for mine. And a much, much shorter spring. And other differences. I'd seen her stuff about the semi-auto pistol before but didn't know she'd made a revolver or bolt rifle. Frankly the ECCO Machine guy does vastly superior work. And as a bonus he's at least as much an autist as she is (or me for that matter).

I live in an 800 sq ft apartment and keep both cars in my garage.

Just where the fuck do you suppose I should put a milling machine?
>>
>>33972862
Depends where you live, deals on small mills are pretty much nonexistent where I live. Craigslist is just filled with people selling beat up Chinese benchtop mills for almost as much as they cost to buy new.

Just buy a Siege X2 revamp from little machine shop. The work they do brings it up to about 700 dollars but you're gtg. If you want to go turbo tard, a digital display is like 150 off of eBay and gives you a precise show of your x, y, and z coordinates.

Take it one step farther and for 400 you can make a mini CANC machine, but would require you to learn CAD, G code and how to actually run a CNC. It's not hard if you learn off of blocks of ABS or wood and move up from there. And it basically let's you machine whatever you want.

Once I get some time and some spare change, I'm going to start machining Guchi 300$ handguards from the same extruded tubing they're made from, for my ARs, night even try doing a from scratch SVD build using some Solid works files I've got that pretty well details everything. All I really need is a 308 AK barrel, but with a bit of work, I could probably use an LR308 barrel too.

Mills and lathes easily pay themselves off if you got the know how, the software and education. Being able to machine 80% lowers, you speak Vodka, you can machine AK parts, custom handguards or clones of turbo high end brand handguards, fuck, theoretically speaking, you could machine your own SCAR as well, all from extruded aluminum stock and billet aluminum, with just doing minor work with the BCG. No heat treatment, just machine work.

That's the plan, soon as I get a house and build my shop.

Got this bad larry when an old friend died. Straight out of the 50's, and unfortunetly uses proprietary collets. Any machinist folks know where one might find collets?

I've been thinking about one of those, actually. I'm in LA, so I can actually drive over to Little Machine Shop and look at them in person.

The only problem is that for most projects I want to do I'll need a mill AND a lathe, and my shop is pretty basic so I'd have to get a grinder and probably a bandsaw at minimum too, and then I'm looking at 3k+ before I can do anything useful. I'm pretty badly limited on space, too, I'm planning on building a 24x60 or so "machine bench" but after that I'm totally out of room to add anything more. My shop is also my laundry room so I have to be careful about dust and chips as well.

I wish I could just buy one of those $3k Bridgeports, but I'd have to rent space somewhere else to use it or something, because there's absolutely no way I could have it at my house. (My garage floor can't handle it and there's no good way to get an 8000lb machine down to my basement workshop, not to mention trying to get three-phase power here would be a nightmare.)

Nah, I'm just a hobbyist who loved that movie when it came out, finally getting around to trying to recreate the rifle. Sort of. Not interested in higher velocity stuff so subsonic .22lr is plenty to suit my plinking/pesting. From what I gather in the film De Gaulle would be someone I could support, as French Empire in North Africa seems a bit stupid. Ignored the politics of the film as a 12 year old. Now I see the ex-soldiers plotting De Gaulle's assassination as somewhat stupid, rather selfish men.
>>
>>33979102
you got a link to any plans or additional pics? Can you upload a video of it firing? I saw the movie when I was younger as well, and the portability of the rifle intrigued me.
>>
>>33979102
To elaborate a little on the 'recreate' aspect... I just listened to the audio book version (no patience to read Forsythe's novel with my eyes) and was somewhat startled to hear the differences in design between the novel and the film. The film version's stock was especially different, but so was the scope mounting, possibly the suppressor mounting arrangement, and perhaps the trigger arrangement. The stock really bugs me now. I made mine with a much shallower (than the 30 degrees mentioned in the novel) so as to get a decent cheek weld relative to the ocular lens. In the film the actor is plainly struggling in two scenes as he tries to find a comfy place to put his face, even swapping back and forth between eyes. With mine it's just right, the strut being 13 degrees down from the barrel and action. But in the novel apparently there are two struts, one going down at 30 degrees (approximately correct in the film version) but then about 2" down that strut from its threaded end, a secondary strut projects back from it at a dramatically shallower angle, forming a triangular stock frame once the LEATHER (not a big ugly chunk of wood as shown in the film) wrapped butt pad is pressed into place on these two struts. What the hell!?

No plans, sorry, I just wing it when making a gun. Started with the main tube for this one - a bit of thin walled pipe with 0.75" OD and 0.060" wall thickness, carved out the weld seam and polished inside and out. Worked my way out from there, using a chunk of barrel liner and some JB Weld to stiffen that with CF tube, except for the first 1.3" or so which is soldered into a steel chunk which itself is then epoxied into the tube. Lots of cobbled together scraps, turned on my very tiny lathe. All threads are hand tapped, which is tricky to get aligned just right. Here's a brief clip in which the secondary sound is the 40gr Remington Subsonic round hitting a rotting stump, slightly louder than the report.

>a teenage girl was able to make her own bolt action rifle with a manual milling machine, why can't you?
Because I don't really feel like spending $500 on equipment, $300 on materials, and $100 on additional electricity, and taking up all of my weekends for three months, to make something that I could walk into Dick's Sporting Goods and buy for $179

>>
>>33979354
Well yeah, guess I'm old enough to be a grandad... but my point is why the hell would a .50" make sense in such a format? You asking to see me blow my own face off? Or more seriously, to scale it up from .22lr for some reason? Suppressors on .50" rifles are more about scaling back hearing protection requirements than for stealth, with a bonus of a small degree of hiding the firing point source, slightly. So yeah, funny, but kind of pointless.
