If youre room clearing, and your weapon runs dry just as a guy charges you, its probably better to draw your knife to at least create some standoff range while you draw your sidearm and engage. Most of hand to hand fighting in the military gyrates around being able to get back to your weapons system quickly and deal with the threat.

With that said, its better to have a knife and not need it than need it and not have one. Maybe not if youre infantry but if youre a super duper high speed low drag oper8r, knives have their place. Survival knives for SERE, in which a knife is indispensible, as well as being able to cut clothing or webbing off of a wounded mate quickly (although many guys carry scissors for this). End of the day its a knife; it weighs a few hundred grams, is easy to carry and if theres the possibility it could save your life, take it.
