It's not a great rifle to be honest anon. You'd be better off getting a really nice DI AR for half the price. Hell, a DD SPR setup would be cheaper, and 5x the rifle in every measurable way.

Asked this last thread but didn't see a response. I'm going to spend about 400 bucks on a red dot, anything I should look at besides the Aimpoint PRO? That's what is on my list right now.

I've got a couple of PSA builds, but growing up as an AK man makes the idea of a piston rifle more comforting than direct-impingement shit-where-you-eat nonsense.

DI really isn't that bad. If it were, ARs wouldn't be as popular as they are. In fact, for use with suppressors, it is far superior than piston systems.

The "shit where it eats" line is just a meme. Pistons are just as dirty, they just deposit their carbon in the gas tube and block.

Short stroke pistons were never made for ARs though. The op rods are too thin, and the actions are too fast and violent. They eat themselves from the inside out, one of the most obvious examples being carrier tilt that chews up the buffer tube.

DI gas vents out the side of the bolt carrier, not inside the receiver. You can see the high velocity gas jet out the side of the carrier here, followed by a slow billow from the recently evacuated chamber (like any other autoloader does).

Not really, there's not much carbon in the gas once it reaches the chamber, and what little there is gets vented through the carrier and out of the holes in it (and the rest of the bolt is shielded by a set of piston rings sealing it up from the inside).

In fact, the AR is not a true DI, a la a Jungmen. It's actually a hybrid piston design, where the bolt itself acts AS A piston.
