Well, it's like guns. You can't just buy the gun, you have to buy everything else that goes along with the gun. In this case you need to have enough room for it if you intend to stand up and walk while using it (useful, but not necessarily required - more of a meme really), the better the GPU you have the happier you are going to be (this is super important for being able to see further). So you need to worry about cost of the device, cost of the GPU, and physical space if you plan on standing up and walking around.

You can find people reselling their whole set in like new condition for like 600-700 bucks. Check craigslist in particular. It is really niche, so be aware of that. If you are looking to use the Vive for porn, that isn't a good idea. It's locked down and no porn for it really exists (last I checked). You are way better off getting one of those headmounted systems using a cellphone if you really just want to use it for porn (which I recommend, VR Porn is godly with a good pair of headphones).

If you don't already have a good GPU (basically a 1070 or better), and you aren't okay with slapping down 700 dollars for something you might only use a few times, I wouldn't recommend it. Go and buy a cellphone mounted system and fap with that. Avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid the Oculus. It's the worst system by a large margin.

All in all (assuming you don't have a good GPU and need to buy one), you are looking at 1,400-1,500 USD (if you live in the US). And like 35sqft for walking around.

Expanding on this-

If you're a gamer with a good rig, then theres no extra cost. I run a GTX970 and 24GB RAM, no problems unless I try to break things. Like H3VR having to deal with a minutes worth of casings from a pair of MAC11

After that, its down to what you want- basic VR can be done with the mobile phone headsets, which are the cheapest option. Dedicated VR for games is the Oculus or PSVR if you have a PS4 instead of a PC.
For room scale, ie. standing and moving around, you need at least 1.5x2m free space. The Oculus requires addons to work, the 3 cameras and Touch controls, while the Vive comes with them standard. The cost is about the same for both, so it comes down to personal preference. Though I'd place the Vive over the Oculus

One thing to keep in mind- we're a few months past the last big tech announcements, which was showing off the next gen headsets, wireless connections, dedicated peripherals, etc. So unless you have a BURNING NEED I'd wait to see what comes next. Speculation was a massive Vive pricedrop which should make it more accessible


As for /k/ games- H3VR is mandatory. Pavlov is ok as a Counter Strike clone. Have yet to get Onward or Arizona Sunrise though they're on the list- focus was on games to show off to mates. Fantastic for being all social and shit

That said to get the same comfort level on Vive you need to buy a $100 extra headband, and Rift just knocked $100 off both the headset and the Touch controllers, so you can get them both for $600, and an extra camera is $60, so that's $660 for a full rig vs $900 for an equivalent Vive setup with less ergonomic controllers.

Had a Rift on loan for a week, liked the experience, don't think the pricing and displays are quite great yet.
