Need to be more specific mate, whats your 1.5 mile run time?
>>
>>33958070
Not sure.

Definitely need to get into better shape though without a doubt.

How does the Army with bigger guys in general though? Or does it just not work until you get yourself ready outside the Army?

If you are talking aout fatties in the military then you can forget it unless you are a SNCO or senior Officer, There are weight requirements that must be passed even before you get your first real medical test.
>>
>>33958159
Not fatties no, just bigger in general.

I'm 6'2 and weight about 175 Pounds

It would be fine if you were applying for the US army where overweight people are just paired up and made to double down on PT.

With the Brit's you will probably need to conform to a minimum standard to be considered since unlike the US the UK is looking to make it's army smaller and more focused on the TA.

Couple of things so you don't get an instant DQ like I did

- Make sure you aren't reliant on any type of meds for atleast 3 YEARS, if you are on meds now head to your local gp and inform him you no longer wish to be given medication of any sort and wait for 3 years.
-Any form of autism is an instant DQ, most commonly asperger's, if you have this speak with an expert about having it sorted out before you apply
-Depression is another massive red flag and a big no-no, if you ever admitted to it you will likely need a doctor's note to be considered.
- Get a full medical checkup there are plenty of physical conditions that will get you DQ, ones that you probably hadn't even thought off.
- Eye tests if you have anything less than 20/20 or 6/6 vision as they will call it you will not make it
- Check your 1.5 mile run time, different branches have different requirements, Paratroopers have the highest, RAF has the lowest.

Lift all you like it is encouraged just remember that cardio training always comes first, no one cares how much you can carry if you cannot carry it for a long distance.

Calm down boss man, I'm just seeking advice from those with experience. I can't ask anyone I know because the only person I know join the Army in the 50s (Granddad) and I'm fairly certain times have changed.

What Regiment were you looking at?
>>
>>33958247
You have the ability to do your own research on the internet. You won't get any actual accurate answers on this thread, because most of the brits on /k/ haven't actually been anywhere near the army, and have only actually read and barely remembered what those small percentage of squaddies have posted.

To be honest he is just looking for a bunch of people to talk with him about the prospect of joining the army.

Sometimes people just wanna talk about aspirations and shit and don't feel comfortable talking about it too family so they come on internet forums they frequent and try discuss it.

It's the reason we have /meg/ and those infrequent cop generals.

Combat engineer is a good choice, if you have a degree going for sandhurst is also worth a shot, I applied and failed but I still enjoyed the process.

Most public service jobs are boring
military, bureaucrat, cop, guard etc etc are all wank but the money and benefits are decent.
>>
>>33959049
how hard is advancement in the ranks, assuming you dont go though sandhurst?
>>
>>33959100

Grandfather went from Private to Major in 35 years, never saw combat though. Was a Grenadier Guard for a bit, then he was claimed by his brother and joined the RMP as a dog handler then later moved onto training soldiers or something and left the Army because of his age and how irritated he was with the formation of the RLC.

>>
>>33958180

Hey. US Army infantryman here, similar spot to you, 6'4 and 200 lbs~.

I can tell you right now, I don't know how they do it over there, but you're gonna probably be doing calisthetic workouts.

That means pullups, running, lots of cardio. Like it's been said before, go ahead and lift, improve yourself, but realize that you're going to be held to a standardized form of fitness, and you being heavier and taller will only work against you in all aspects. With pullups especially I have had trouble because I didn't train lats as good as I should have, and you can't afford to be an amateur with that sort of thing as a tall person. You will not improve as fast or as quickly as your shorter, weaker, smaller counterparts, and they will score above you on your tests while putting in less effort.

So before you ship out, look up some boot camp ready programs and stick to them religiously. Allen Thrall has some good videos, and so does Scooby.

Run loads, rapid 1.5 mile runs in best time, long slow runs and HIIT/sprints.
If you want to sort yourself out for later then practice hiking with a bit of weight on you and aim for 15 minute miles.
Stop lifting and start doing bodyweight; aim for 70 push ups in 2 minutes and the same with sit ups. As a guy who went in more on the strength side, that extra mass is only going to slow you down, you just need to be functionally strong and able to throw your bodyweight around easily.

If you want to be in the best shape of your life, make some incredibly good mates, see combat and probably fuck your joints up for life, go infantry.
If you want to have a good trade and skills when you get out but probably hate your life when youre in, join Signals, Aviation, REME, Medical Corps or RE.
If you absolutely fucking hate your knees and back and are a masochist, go Paras or Royal Marines and then attempt SAS/SBS selection.
>>
>>33957989
Go for it. If it's like the US then it's a 4 year commitment.

Do it. You'll make friends for life. Chase some tail. And then come back and talk about it to nerdy virgins and saltdog "American wankers" like me.
>>
>>33957989
Know how to drive off road. They are mounting up the infantry a bit more now. Use the army's guides on stamina, max lift ect on the army website. Work towards the brackets for infantry so you pass the 2 day testing. Do the practice tests mate the army loves semi intelligent soldiers. Apart from that mate good luck and god bless.
>>
>>33961015
>Paras or Royal Marines and then attempt SAS/SBS selection

Which one is regarded as the most elite within the British Army? I know RM and SBS aren't technically army.
>>
>>33962060
Paras claim they are the best and tell everyone they are, everyone hates them for it. RM's think they are the best but only say it to paras to piss them off, RM's are loved by everybody else. In reality they are pretty equal but will never admit it.
>>
Is there such a thing as "too intelligent" for infantry?
>>
>>33962093
No, Infantry is where you go to "be a real soldier". Many join before or after university for a stint to experience adventure, you will meet the dumbest and the smartest people you will ever find in the Infantry. If you want to really hunt out the dumb fucks then look at drivers, cooks and blanket stackers.
>>
What is a "territorial"?
>>
>>33962152
Reservist, it is not called the TA anymore because territorial implies you will not be deployed.
>>
>>33962186
The ironic thing is that reserve battalions now have preference over regs in terms of deployment possibilities.
>>
>>33962256
I know, who the fuck thought this was a great idea?
>>
>>33962060
In terms of physical aptitude its pretty much on par between RM and Paras, P Coy sounds gruelling but then again the Commando tests arent a cakewalk either.
In terms of being elite, the Paras call everyone else craphats and some are a bit full of themselves (fairly earned though), RM are generally just hard bastards and good lads.

Both the Paras and Royal Marines contribute a detachment to the SFSG who basically acts as Tier 2 operators (much like US army rangers) in support of UKSF ops.
>>
>>33962267
Probably the same bloke who came up with 'one army' and changed it from 'territorial' to 'reservist' because apparently it can be demeaning or some bollocks.
>>
>>33962302
Who gets to do the most cool exercises RM or Paras? I know RMs can get stuck on ships for 6 months.
>>
>>33962494
RM get to roll in the snow in Norway, I have no idea if the Paras get to do that.
>>
>>33962494
Depends, not massively up to date on their exercises. Paras get to go to the US occasionally and take part in big exercises with the 82nd airborne, but a lot of that is because we dont have the budget for them to practice jumping out of planes whenever they fancy.
RMs likely get some cool amphibious exercises, can also get some foreign garrisons, dont know enough about their Exs though.

A lot of British infantry in general goes over to the Baltics and takes part in wargames, usually playing as Opfor and generally does pretty well. Theres also yearly exercises in Canada, but im not sure if thats mainly reservist based.

Royal Marines are more specialist in terms of terrains they fight in, they specialise in jungle, mountain and arctic warfare, and a number of years ago Marines were used in conjunction with US anti narcotics forces in South America to do deep recce and surveillance of arms dealers and drugs manufacturers in the jungle.

>>
>>33962644

>>
>>33962665

>>
>>33962701
I think youre the lad i was having a very similar convo with a few days ago. Remember youre doing it for you, not them. If you live in Ireland I wouldnt even recommend wearing the uniform out and about because there are some nutters about, not worth the attention. You dont need to tell the community youre in the army; and at the end of the day if people hate on you for joining the british army, theyre stuck in the past and are remembering the IRA days with rose tinted glasses, neither of which you can do anything about, so just crack on with your life and your interests.

>>
Yall let Americans join? I did a few years in our army, 12 months in Afghanistan
>>
>>33962819
Scots are overrepresented in the armed forces in general, as a Wegie i can tell you you either go on the dole or join the army. Moved down to england fairly early on but a lot of my mates joined up out of school.

Not certain but theres probably a fair few scots in both the RM and Paras but you will be the token scotsman in the platoon if not the coy.

There are a few RM units in scotland but at Lympstone you will be one of a few if any scots in your intake yes, but it wont matter much, everyone gets the piss taken out of them and a stupid nickname, such is life.

Also I wouldnt worry about the accent, unless you sound like an islander youll be fine, i was in training with a welsh bloke and we could only judge whether he was happy or sad based upon the tone of his voice. Youll also get a lot of northerners and southerners and accents from all over the shop, as well as fairly smart lads and lads who are as thick as two short planks. End of the day you start off an individual and come out as a collective.

Good to see another wegie on here going for the forces btw, good lad.

I was briefly considering joining and aiming for a Tank Crew position, but I spoke with a bloke who's currently in and he basically told me you're in a cramped, hot space that smells for hours upon end. And it kinda lost it's appeal after that.

Havent been but heard a fair bit. Basically the AOSB is a four day gut check, you have to be in good shape, have a pretty good run time and be able to work well under pressure. Theyll basically do a complete personal profile; a lot of lads pretend to be the stereotypical officer, say that they play polo on the weekends and speak twelve languages...they have a guy at Sandhurst who speaks 20+ languages and will immediately call you out on your bullshit. They arent looking for pompous twats, theyre looking for good, fit, smart blokes with a spine and some moral courage.
There will be lots of plan ex, i.e youre given a map of a village in Ethiopia, told that theres a dam about to burst and flood this village, you have X amount of vehicles, its all speed distance time stuff and how you plan it. You can fuck it up and kill everyone and still pass, its just how you deal with it. Also lots of stuff about courage and turnout, making sure youre doing your CDRILS, theyll call you out on shit you didnt do to see who has the bollocks to own up or if people will lay blame on others.

Again this is all just stuff ive heard, but yeah, they arent looking for the sons of Lords, theyre looking for fit blokes with their noggins screwed on.

The job markets here are decent, especially for tradies. Theres blokes I know who work for British Gas and get 500 quid a day doing callouts; if someones boiler breaks down, they go out, make sure it doesnt work, then call a repairman and fuck off home. Tradesmen here get pretty decent pay and pretty good hours, the more skilled your trade the better it is.

Also, dont believe the memes, britain is 95% white and you wont see a muzzie outside of Bradford.

That is really good to hear, I'll have to consider it more once I finish school. Canada is more or less the same, with the liberals and their brown pets congregating around the liberal containment zone(LCZ) known as Toronto. That sounds like decent money especially when I'm used to the syrup shekel being so low recently, and part time/summer jobs. Any idea what rent costs for somewhere half decent around work, I'm currently paying $1468 syrup shekels in Toronto for a place without AC and a decent sized 1bdrm apartment under 1000 sqft

Don't join the Royal Irish, English don't give a shit who you are but having a southern Irish accent in the RIR might lose you some friends.

This so much, if you are a catholic and join any "British institution" such as the army they will target you.

Don't forget Ronan Kerr a catholic was tracked through his police training and murdered during his first few days on the job. Dissidents are more eager on targeting those who they consider "traitor's" and if they got word about an Irish lad in the regulars they wouldn't pass up the chance, only tell your close family if you decide to join.

To add to this.

If you have any joint pains, DO NOT mention them in the medical. A guy I was with at mine had some knee pain from a 10k run earlier that week. He ended up getting a six month deferral.

I'm talking about people with uncorrectable vision, if you have a lazy eye it will screw you so hard (glasses don't work with lazy eye)
