The Colt SP1 is just pure fucking sex to me lately. I never paid attention to them before the last couple months, but now I can't keep my mind off of wanting one.

What happened to me? Why am I craving a 50 year old rifle?
>>

It's called either nostalgia or yearning for "the good old days". SP1 is pure sex, along with A1 reciever XM177EM2's.

We are in an age where everything is smart, over designed and over complicated. The SP1 is a minimalist rifle. It's light and it does what it is supposed to do, that is all. I think it's perfectly reasonable for a rational person to want to get back to basics.
>>
>>33957701
it's not even made by Colt, they outsourced it and just slap their name on it.

I'm more of an AK guy, and a lover of tactical shit to boot, but ye olde M16-style AR would be my .223 gun of choice. I've also heard that A1 is very lightweight and accurate.

That's how Colt built the SP1s, they had lots of pre-A1 parts thaf they used in mix with A1 parts.

I've once seen a rifle with a pre-A1 upper, otherwise A1 parts, except for A2 handguards.

Bought mine in 1977, for the princely sum of $290. Back then, that was 10 hours shy of a month's pay.

Weighed 6 pounds and change, ergonomically perfect, and I could generally hit whatever I aimed at out to whatever range I was comfortable taking a shot. Buddy of mine shot skeet with it once. Damn fine gun, I still regret selling it.

Really looks like it's missing the barrel and obviously the lower reciever. Nodakspud makes a correct A1 lower but they have a literal near year backorder on those things.

damnit. Anywhere else I can get these lowers? Or is it just Nodak and gunbroker for right now?
>>
>>33971524
They do have 80% XM16E1 lowers ready to ship. I would imagine getting it milled out and properly anodized in the correct color would be a faster process.

http://nodakspud.com/AR%20Lowers.htm
>>
>>33971562
That does sound like a good idea.
But (and forgive me for being retarded) what do you mean by getting it milled? Would I have to get it sent to a gunsmith?
>>
>>33971304
Colt still had a bunch of perfectly good pre-A1 uppers left when making A1 spec SP1 rifles, a lot of rifles came with an A1 BCG in a pre-A1 upper.

It still works.

Getting the lower reciever cut into a "firearm". It will require specialized machining, you may have to send it off to a professional that will do this correctly.

Absolutely fucking not.

An AR15 is always a good first gun to own for its versatility in uses and the only real problem you'll face is the inability to configure it to a more modern AR better suited for say HD (flashlight, red dot) which you shouldn't be doing to a retro AR/SP1 anyways.

If you are interested in Vietnam era M16's and want an AR, definately get it.

>>33971731

The AR-15 platform is fantastic. However, because there are so many choices out there, it's best to do your research before buying. You can't fuck up buying a SCAR, a SCAR is one rifle made by one company. That said, you could go to a local gun store and/or poorfag board and be lead astray. Not all AR-15 rifles are created equal.
>>
>>33971787
If you want to cut metal, take a community college machinist course. You'll learn better than by trial and error. Then study how to buy a decent used milling machine. They are insanely nice to have and my old, but sound Bridgeport only cost a thousand bucks with some tooling. It came with a crude solid state phase converter but I'll eventually power my lathe and mill off a rotary RPC I loaned to my bro in return for assembling it.

Tools get you toys. Toys can get you tools if you barter, and rednecks with machine tools love to trade for firearms. My gunsmithbro got his mill and lathe that way.

Get some brand new aluminum mags and put MagPul springs and followers in them (don't put the anti-tilt followers in the straight 20rd mags though).

Also for ammo, I recommend Golden Tiger 5.56x45mm, the ammo should be M193 spec, which ought to fit the rifle like a glove (not that it can't shoot other stuff).
>>
>>33971969
>what do you call people that are too into Vietnam guns and aesthetics?

People who are interested in the Vietnam war and its weapons? You don't call someone a mallninja for owning "tacticool", only when it's done out of context or with poor quality "tactical" gear
>>
>>33972550
Is GT .223 good or better than Wolf? I want to buy some more AR ammo but XM193 is too expensive for what I need to do with my gun and the minimal increase of accuracy isn't an issue at the distances I want to shoot at.

I have one, 3 digit serial number, 3XX. Bought it in 1984 for 300 bucks.
