/MSG/ Milsurp general anyone?

So I've got a weird situation. Online friend is buying a Mosin, their first gun. Not weird. Through discussion I find out that what they were talking about being an 91/30 has a side folding bayonet, which makes it an M44 yes? They had also called it a '44 before but insisted it was a full length gun. So I tell them it's an M44 and they're happy and I think about going to get one because they're 2 hours away and the store has a couple more.

Problem is it's not an M44. It's a full length gun. Online friend says they had to measure it and get a 52 inch bag for the gun.

But it has a side-folding bayonet.

So...WTF? Anyone heard of this shit before? Bubba? Rare trials model? 7.62x54r.net has nothing that sounds like this.
>>
Probably bubba but still would be neat

Does this count as milsurp? FCG and receiver are new, but the rest of it is pretty much all from the parts kit. Original barrel with a welded extension.

I am going to SBR it and get a parts kit with an original barrel and the slanted shroud without the compensator

I have one and have shot it.

The cross bolt that holds the recoil spring keeps snapping on mine and rendering it inoperable.
>>
>>33947093
Damn, that's not encouraging. I'm guessing that cross bolt isn't in the original design, but is a part of the semi auto only bolt?
>>
>>33947093
Also I have two questions for you. Do your mags wriggle front to back, and is the charging handle supposed to kind of stick and lock to the back?
>>
>>33947134
It's part of the semi auto conversion.
That open dick shaped channel shouldn't be there.
They milled it out to make space for the hammer to hit the free floating firing pin. Not sure if the back of the original bolts were hollow or not, but at any rate it's drilled straight through the back up to the firing pin. That cross bolt keeps the recoil spring from hitting the firing pin and interfering with the hammer, it's a cheap thin pin and I've received a replacement from TNW that has already broken again.

I may need a gunsmith to mill out a larger hole for a thicker piece of steel rod to be inserted.
>>
>>33947145
Mine started sticking to the back after a while, I'm sure it's dirty and needs thorough cleaning or polishing, it shouldn't stick.
I've had to bang the gun on the floor to get the bolt to slam back forward.

My mags rock back and forth and side to side just a bit, I never had cycling or feeding issues in the gun except for with the drum mag which I'm sure just needs some tinkering.
But when that bolt snaps I get nothing but light strikes on the primers.

OP here, in a move that I'm sure will shock you all it turns out that the person I was getting the information from was just retarded.

May have cost me a chance at a decent Garand with a bayonet for under $1000 too. On the other hand I found a local, monthly gun show that I'm going to be attending every time now. They have a Jungle Carbine, a couple trapdoors, a trapdoor carbine and the aforementioned Garand. Hopefully that's normal.

Because the CMP is out of stock of everything except for drill rifles and M1Cs?

I'd love an M1C, but I'm not paying $1400 for a mid-grade gun.

I'm honestly not 100% certain I want to win it anyway. I want a Mosin carbine, but I'd prefer an M44 actually, I bid on the 91/59 because it was cheap and then it jumped right up to the max I'm willing to put on it and has stayed there for a couple days.

>>33953686

If you're viewing a an investment I'm...skeptical, but not against the idea. While it's true that supply and demand will likely push prices up there's no guarantee that demand won't deflate for some reason, cratering prices. Milsurp has little intrinsic value, most of it is decidedly inferior to what's available new, so demand relies on desire, which may not be permanently sustained.

For myself, and I suspect many others, investment isn't part of my mindset. I'm collecting for historical and fun reasons.

Lads, Im currently bored of shooting my SKS. Ever since I got an Ishapore 2a1, I feel like a bolt action is much more enjoyable to shoot than a semi auto. What deters me from selling it off and getting a k31 or something is the fact that 7.62x39 is cheap and that the SKS is my first gun, so theres sentimental value. What would you fellas do? Or if there's someone out there who's been in a similar situation, what did you do?
>>
>>33955085

I would keep it. I sold my SKS to my dad and I keep thinking about trading my AR to him to get it back. Alternately I'm thinking about snagging a yugo.

>>33955114
It is a '52 Tula refurb, so theres that. Given that almost all I see out there are yugos and norincos, I see another reason to hang on. I dunno, maybe the milsurp bug has got me good and I don't have enough disposable income to keep up. Like christ the K31 and M1 Garand are certainly on my list, but just today I saw JG sales has Argentine Mausers with Mannlicher stocks and I was almost drooling at the aestetics.

My short terms goals are:

Carcano
Garand
MAS 36
Arisaka (pref Type 38)
'03 Springfield
1866 Trapdoor
Complete Krag/rebuild my sporterized one
M14 clone
>>
>>33959148
I wish my short list was that affordable

SVT
G41
AG42
Luger Carbine
Lewis Gun
nazi marked ppk in .32acp
complete my project guns (Kar88, Stomperud Krag, 1903a3, 1915 Beretta)
>>
>>33959082
Clearing, not cleaning. It was only used to push out stuck cases. That's why they got rid of them in the 1920s. So they're uncommon to find originally like that.
>>
>>33959367

Notice I said short-term. Also I forgot the K98k.

Medium term goals:

SVT
G41 (W)
G43
1917 Enfield
M44 and M38 carbines
Trapdoor carbine
M1 carbine
1941 Johnson
7.35mm Carcano
Type 99
Type 44
Original Henry
Original Spencer
Set of long rifles (M91, Type 38, long Lee-Enfield, G98, long Carcano)

Then there's long term goals, which amount to a complete set of WW2 and American cartridge firing guns.

If I skin you, and wear the skin, do you think I would be able to take over your life? Asking for a friend.

>>33959699

I mean, let's face it, most of the milsurp guns are going to be underwhelming in practical use. If they were whelming we'd still be using them.

One of the ones in my long-term that I really hope I can actually find is a G41 (M), because having a bolt-action semi-auto would be delightful.

I can't even list most of my short term purchases because they're already difficult to find and someone here might snatch one up if I do.

Yes, yes they do. Just bid what you're willing to pay though and it doesn't matter.
>>
>>33960524

depends on the rifle and how common it is. I have seen Lebels, M1 garands, m1 carbines, mas 36s ALL sky rocket in price over the span of maybe 6-7 hours.

meanwhile I have seen arisakas, ross rifles, and a couple others just have 1 or 2 bids and that's it.

Most of the ones I've watched (which isn't many) have. Of course the one I just won stayed flat for 4 days starting about a half hour after I made my only bid. If the other person had put $5 more in I'd have tapped out.

You can look, but it'll be hit or miss. I went to two gun shows yesterday, one small one put on by a local collector's group that had some boner-worthy guns and a TON of other random bits and bobs. Are gun show guns usually more expensive than a good deal you can find online? Or are they themselves "good deals"?
>>

It's no different than GB IMO, you'll find good stuff and not so good stuff. I was going to buy a Garand with bayonet for somewhere around $1000 yesterday but the show closed before I got back. That's a decent price. Then you'll find people selling guns for 4 times their real value.

The advantage of gun shows is that you're bidding against a handful of people, instead of something like GB where you're bidding against the entire country.

They're worth going to if you're looking for milsurp, but they won't replace online sources.
>>
>>33966443
It is pretty nice. Definitely one of my favorite to shoot.
>>
>>33945196

Have you considered someone may have just put the bayonet on the muzzle backwards, and it LOOKS like a side folding bayonet?

how much longer until you know when you win? usually the price goes up exponentially in the final couple minutes when people actually start bidding

also make sure it doesnt have a reserve. for some reason, fudds are obsessed with setting reserves on their milsurp auctions. i message them asking their reserve price and if they refuse to tell me i dont bother, and i always tell them to cut that bullshit out because it just pisses off buyers. just start the auction at the cheapest price you can live with letting the gun go and stop being a faggot

$300-500 is normal depending on condition and matching numbers. the low end being a mismatched shooter with some wear vs the higher end being excellent condition with all matching

A little over a day. No reserve. On the one hand the price may, and should, shoot up, on the other hand the 91/59 that I just got stayed level for the full last 48 hours.

The idea with low starts and reserves is to get people invested in the idea of winning the raifu so they bid more than they wanted to originally.

I'd pay $250 for one.

Luck of the draw. These were stored in a Miami warehouse for 30 years and these are the ones that SAMCO thought in too-poor condition to sell (though at the end there their business practices were very lazy and plenty of decent stuff was buried under junk). If it hasn't been eaten by rust it'll be fine.

Cast the chamber.

>how do I measure the result properly and exactly so I know it's the cartridge I'm needing?

Calipers, then compare those dimensions to published specifications. However, if you compare it to an unfired .303 cartridge and they look about the same it's pretty safe to assume it's still .303; there just aren't that many cartridge conversions you can do with the .303 chamber that would still fit a .303 round in.

The short, short answer is that those are unit and training markers, since the U.S. used them as training rifles. Also it designates which particular pattern and revision your rifle is.
