Would it be a good idea to build a M16a1 style AR as my first AR? I don't have any prior experience with them, so that's why I'm a bit cautious. Also, what kind of prices am I looking at for this build?

Just make sure the barrel is 20 inches and there's not much that can go wrong. Since it'll be a frankengun expect it's parts to feel a little loose.

Mine was 1500 all told. It has all Colt parts but the lower and barrel. You can build one for less though if you don't mind it being not autistically correct
>>
Also to add on, I'm sort of at a tossup between this build and buying an AK (SLR107). Only other rifle I have right now is an SKS.
Thoughts?

You'll spend a fuckton to get one right which is off-putting so you'll cheap out on parts and end up building a monstrosity instead of an actual clone and that's fucking retarded.

Unless you're going to do it 100% correctly, which you won't, don't.

>>33938067
this is so fucking dumb it hurts
>>
>>33938099
what retard buys a 100-series AK in 7.62

buy a Colt SP-1 or skip the whole thing
>>
>>33938111
5.56 has always been meant to be fired out of a 20 inch barrel for proper muzzle velocity. It's also well known that built AR's feel more loose in their sockets than ones you buy outright fully built.

There's a thousand times more to an A1 build than just any 20" barrel you retard, and no, if you have regular parts its not going to be "loose in its sockets"

holy shit dude

The first anon is more correct. While the AR platform is extremely standardized, different companies have different ideas of what counts as "out of spec".

Which means that if you buy budget parts they will likely have more variance to them than if you buy parts from a company that sells expensive precision engineered components.

Stacking tolerances is also a thing, so while one or two slightly out of spec parts will likely make no difference having a budget AR made out of bargain bin parts makes for a gun that rattles like a maraca.

If you buy nothing but premium precision parts and assemble your own AR, it will probably have excellent fit and finish. However you'll be spending a lot more money. On the plus side, it will be exactly the way you want it.

t. Anon who has fired budget, production, and gucci AR's.

I've built over two dozen AR's. Cheap parts make a shitty rifle, not mixed parts. A Rock River lower and a Colt Upper fit together fine and would have no issue mounting a Windham barrel.

Don't use retarded parts, don't end up with a retarded gun. All AR's have looser tolerances to function.

The parts kits are horrendously overpriced these days but there is nothing that makes it a particularly bad idea compared to building a different style of ar.
The handguards might be somewhat more of a hassle compared to a free floated handguard but they are not particularly difficult to install. Just don't be a weak-ass bitch and you will be ok.

>>33938085
>1500

Damn when did you build that? You could do the same for about 1,200 only a year and half ago including a punch set, upper vice block, barrel wrench, and a few miscellaneous detent springs and the like.

do you even have a diemaco bolt? colt barrel? did you use a colt LPK? is every other part colt?
>>
>>33938581
601's and 602's didn't but all 603's did. That means ALL M16A1's had forward assists and full fencing with the exception of the Air Force's 604 which isn't technically an A1.

I built this for less than $500 for all the parts shown (not my pic) and with the extra cash i bought a $90 SJC titan. I had to pay $20 for a jig to mill out the receiver, but that $20 came right back because a $19.99 sticker was on the Magpul stock box so i got a $40 dollar part for cheaper

no

but if you're going to do an A1, do an A1. Don't mixmatch parts, it has too look like an A1 to be a clone, using only authentic parts no longer makes it a clone.

Its an iconic enough rifle as everybody knows those parts don't go together and it is still well received. I added a magnifier and Trij MRO like pic.

I'm going for a 6.5 Grendel M16A2 flat top(cuz fuck KAC rail) build with Cobray CM203 37mm with 1 - 6x30 or 4-12x40 . Its inspired by ME Andromeda and this will be my " space colony gun" if Spacex ever gets its ass up to the task

Impressed you did it on a budget but the dust cover and more importantly the pigfat profile barrel are a bit disappointing.
How well does the F marked FSB work out with the carry handle upper?

Sure, I'm sure somebody makes the triangular hand guards. Get a modern 20" barrel and all those Vietnam problems will be avoided.
>>
>>33938047
Why do you need forward assist?
Are you firing ammo with WW2 propellant?
>>
>>33940367
The vietnam problems came from the army changing ammo types without also replacing the springs, the 20 inch barrel has more to do with making the most of the 5.556 cartridge but you're not wrong.
>>
>>33940367
This guy at a gunshow told me that we should be seeing a lot more new productions hand guards because colt is making a classic line and High Standard is making a lot of parts for them
