When I was a kid my family raised goats for extra money. Anyway, I raised this one Nubian from the time I was three. I fed him from a bottle while I was still getting silverware figured out. I named him Sundown, because of the way his ears draped down and went from tan at the tips to black where they joined his head. I showed him in the country fairs, and he went with me everywhere. He ranged free at night, and all day he was close by while I worked and played on the ranch. He always new the way home, and I never felt lonely. He even ran off some coyotes that got too inquisitive for his liking.
One morning when I was about nine he didn't show up. I did my chores and around eight in the morning I started looking for him. I found him at around noon. I remember how stark the lighting was. A mountain lion had run him all over the mountainside, then pounced him. There were claw gashes all over his face, shoulders, and back. He had tried to fight the thing once he was cornered against a cliff. The cat had taken one bite out of his hindquarters and left him. It wasn't even hungry, it just wanted to play those stupid sadistic cat games.

My family found me hours later on a different mountain. I had gotten a small tree, stripped it, cut a wedge, and lashed my little Swiss army knife into a notch I cut into the thick end.

I still dislike cats. I don't hate them or anything, but I can't stand the way they play with the things they hunt.

i really liked that cat but in all honestly he probably brought it on himself.
