How practical is it to build an AR specifically to change calibers with it? I already have an AR in .223 which I pretty much plan to turn into a "race gun" or just a premium rifle (hell it already is with the Cobalt receiver). I'm thinking about building another instead of an AK, just for fun.
The idea is to buy a different BCG/barrel/upper assembly for each caliber, so I can have a rifle that does it all. I've got my heart set on 6.5 Grendel for long-range shenanigans, .300BLK for suppressed shenanigans, and .50 Beowulf for big-bore shenanigans. Planning on the 6.5 first.
I don't know a lot about the alternate calibers, and I don't know a lot about building. Does each caliber require proprietary mags, and how limited are my options for different barrels and such? What's the best bang for your buck receiver (mix-matched upper/lower is fine)?
Additionally, what do you think about Phase 5 AR accessories? I like the looks of their M-lok slope-nose handguard, but given my limited knowledge and the absolute shit-tons of brands on the AR market, I wouldn't know horseshit from golden eggs.

Not all uppers will run best on all buffer setups. Somewhat mitigated by going for adjustable gas blocks on all the rifles or buying several buffers which is impractical and retarded maintaining an inventory of instead of just building multiple rifles.

There is literally no reason not to considering the current market for all things AR15

Building a whole AR would be quite expensive for each caliber, but maybe in the future I will do that. I just figured it would be much easier and cheaper to build one lower + stock + trigger to swap out upper assemblies for. Guess I was wrong.
Like I said, I'm new to this and have no idea what brands are good, so I don't care about the brand marked on the receiver, even if it's a poorfag one, if it works for the money, that's fine.

If you want to shoot different calibers then get complete uppers for each one (BCG and charging handle included) to make things easy. Certain calibers require different barrels, bolts, and magazines so it all comes down to which ones in particular you are planning to go with. The nice part is that literally any part you can imagine for ARs is made by a bunch of manufactures so don't worry about finding things like barrels.

AR lowers are nice because you can use most uppers so long as they fits but there are a few things to consider:

- The calibers you can use in a standard AR lower are limited by what fits in the magwell
- Proper buffer weights are dependent on what caliber you're using and how long the barrel is. A good setup for a suppressed 10.3" 5.56 SBR won't work too well with a .50 Beowulf, etc.
- Preferred trigger type, weight, and style aren't universal. A 2lb two-stage trigger is great for a precision rifle but not a home Defense AR

Decide what you want to do with these rifles and caliber choice will be easy

Pretty much plinking, possibility of learning long range on the 6.5 Grendel. I'm not a hunter and would rather use a shotgun for HD so I guess the .50 is just for shiggles. Could probably go without, just the idea of the switching uppers per caliber sounded like a better idea than spending a grand per rifle just for basic bitch in wildcat cartridges.
I guess the only one I really, really want right now is the 6.5.
Don't know a lot about triggers. I'm fine with both double and single stage as long as they're under 7lbs.

Easiest thing would be two lowers: one for precision and one for everything else. That would let you pick triggers, buffer, and furniture for each one that goes with their purpose. The rest comes down to budget. Upper tier AR manufacturers include BCM, Colt, DD, KAC, Larue, LMT, and Noveske. You can always build or buy for less but you get what you pay for IMO

I have a Sig M400, and I'm tired of my Magpul Polyshit handguard. I want a well built FSP aluminum picatinny quad rail (for whatever reason I hate the look of Mlok and such), but I don't have the cash for a DD RIS (pic related) or another $500 rail. If I remember correctly, a lot of lowers (unless they're milled or cast differently, ie they have a gay skull for a magwell) come from the same place so they're literally the same ones anderson sells for cheap and spike's sells for a shitload.

This might be a stupid question, but do lowers exist that let you shoot with the safety in the full-auto position?
I don't know if I just have big/fat hands or I'm holding the rifle wrong, but with the safety at the semi-auto spot it kinda digs into my finger/hand and while I could live with it I'd rather not if I can build my own rifle.
