The standard commonwealth rondel is too similar to a target and when serving alongside yanks it's an accident waiting to happen.
An outline of the country was too hard to distinguish and the national fern looked too much like a white feather. Best to go with a fat bird that also happens to be the national nickname.

classic. fond memories growing up watching this in the late 80s/early 90s. Then 10 years later in high school a close group of friends i used to hang out with were big fans, then we went off to college and would sometimes have it on over our morning coffee in our shitty student flat (not as shitty as their flat). That show is actually how i discovered the great band SAXON, which Vivian's character often wore the shirt of. The LIVE musical appearances on the show were killer: MOTORHEAD, the DAMNED, etc. Classic show.
