It was because it was first time weapons and comms tech kept teh combatants so far apart from each other that whole units would be wiped out, because troops couldn't physically see the whole front, and therefor lose morale and break

WW1 was far more devastating for the French and British than WW2 when it comes to military lives lost. Granted, Britain was not hit as hard in WW2 (Battle of Britain) and France was occupied but the casualties and devastation was far higher.

Just looking at figures:

WW1 British military Casualties: 994,138

WW2 French Military Deaths: 210,000 + 300,000 civilians
WW1 French Deaths: 1,150,000 + 40,000 Civilians

This is wrong in so many ways.
It was horrific from a technical standpoint due to the mass adoption of machine guns and heavy artillery, which had never been used in war between military powers before. Also the removal of the idea of 'honourable combat' replaced with the horrendous bloody slog of trench warfare. Entire units got wiped out because commanders didnt know how to effectively break through enemy defences except with bombard and zerg rush. Morale broke because 70%+ of casualties came from artillery which you couldnt even see coming, youd spent months in a trench contracting fucked up diseases and seen your mates get blown to bloody ribbons.

Wikipedia and Google have done more for my historical education than my high school history classes ever did. If you drive around rural Ontario you'll see hundred year old monuments with the names of the guys from that town who died, in almost every small town. There'll usually be 10-30 names, but at the time that would have been about 1/4-1/3rd of the entire town, gone.

Keep in mind that the entire British Army in 1914 numbered around 100,000 professional men total. Britain had never been a large land army power, their power rested in their Navy. To lose 800,000 men dead is no small thing for a relatively small island nation.

French losses, when adjusted to the current population of the U.S. would be equivalent to losing something like 11 million people, dead, to a war.

I think it's going to vary school to school. My high school World History class went into detail about WWI because the teacher was also the AP European History teacher. But in my American History class it was basically what you said.

Also, when I went to the University of Missouri, I took the "US History Post Civil War" course

I read a book about British WWI propaganda. There was one poster from late in the war that I can't find online. It showed a dapper, gray haired gentleman with a cane and a big grin on his face, high stepping to his nearest recruitment office. Above, it read "ENLISTMENT AGE RAISED TO FIFTY!" Below was a little rhyme. As best I can remember it:
