If you ever have to use a knife in self-defense, you want it to look like a boy scout knife in court.
That is, plain, 4 inch folder with a secure lock, not tacticool black.
Moreover, "No one wins a knife fight" is a meme. The odds of going all West Side Story are slim. Google "justified stabbing" and you'll see most blade self defense is against unarmed multiple training.
Also, training. FMA is best, particularly for weapon retention and non-lethal use.

I'd consider a self-defense/urban defense knife to be a one-time, use and lose sort of weapon.
Even if you are 100% justified in the use of the knife, I would expect for it to be locked up in an evidence room indefinitely; so just pick up something that won't shatter after a moderate thrust or slash. Worst case scenario, it chips or bends when it hits bone and you're out 15-20 bucks
