Is the mini 14 still a viable defensive carbine? I'm a few AR's deep and I just want a basic bitch wooden stock mini 14 ranch rifle. Is that dumb?
>>
>>33905402
Are you seriously asking if a mini 14 will still kill someone?

Did humans evolve steel skin in the last 30 years or something?
>>
>>33905414

black powder will still kill someone but I don't think a black powder pistol is a viable ccw option

The mini-14 STILL uses the exact same cartridge as the most prevalent, ubiquitous carbine in the United states plus the mini-30 covers ever ex-soviet satellite plus the 6.8spc and .300blk variants. How much weaker could the argument get and how the fuck does comparing an AR-15 Analogue to a musket make sense to you
>>
>>33905438
mate an ar15 and a mini14 are pretty much the same rifle in practice
>>
>>33905472
I know it's an outdated as fuck action (i own 2 m14s) but i still want to get a mini and that mini ebr stock

If you already have a few AR's, why bother with a new rifle that uses completely different, proprietary magazines? What is the Mini 14 going to do that your AR's already don't?

It's not "dumb", but you're going to have to accept that you're going to be paying more for the rifle and mags, than for an economy AR that will probably outperform it in every way. If it were me, I'd get a "special" Mini, like the limited run duo-tone w/ black laminate stock Ranch Rifles.

Yes it is.

Now, inb4 the massive flood of butthurt AR fanboys who will spend 100+ posts autistically screeching about the fact that the universe contains a viable alternative to their favorite raifu.

Or a gb like op posted. Those are boss as fuck. Try finding one though. Not impossible but kinda tricky.
Also to OP sure, what do you have to lose? You might like it. It's a good beater/loaner gun if nothing else.
>>
Magazine cost keeps me away. I put the money toward a M1A instead.
>>
>>33905566
Damn right you do

>>33905576
Yeah, the ones that help hold the noodles on the OG mini and don't do shit foe the new ones but kinda help the look
>>
Only real complaint I have with the Mini is the mag cost and that they seem to be erractic about accuracy.
Down a hallway, no problem. But I've seen new guns shot on 25 yard sight in targets that were almost one holers and others that looked like buckshot patterns. Lots of net talk about ways to fix that if you want.
It'a decent rifle but AR's are a better deal.
>>
>>33905711
Tapco Gen 2. 15$ and they work. Readily available. 30 rounds.
>>
>>33905438
Pshhhh* whatever kid...
>>
>>33905790
On new models it's commonly the rear sight. It's hot garbage. Comes loose easily and doesn't hold zero worth shit. I've seen people flip out at a Mini-14 at the range because it's grouping like shit only to find that rear aperture wiggling loose.
Only way to fix it is either a fuck heap of locktite or a $75 tech sight.
>>
>>33905402
The Mini 14 is still a great viable defensive carbine. It is a competent, reliable rifle for most situations.

It's main negatives are cost and reliability under extreme conditions. The rifle itself can run into the 800-900 range for a new one, or 600+ for a used one. Not considering that magazines are outrageously expensive and aftermarket metal magazines are a joke, it can be a costly investment. As for reliability, your rifle will function just fine, as long as you have quality magazines. If you're prepping for SHTF or something, you are much better off getting any AR-15.

Besides this, there is really no reason to own the Mini 14, unless you want a carbine rifle that has the M1 style action.

>If you want a rifle with the M1 action and stopping power, get a M1 Garand. Then you have something with history to it.
>If it needs to be a carbine, get the M1 Carbine rifle. Then, you have a historical rifle, removable mags, and a war-proven rifle.
>If you want something with a bit more power behind it, while also having an option for magazines, get the M1A, or the Mini 30.
>If you want a rifle with the sporter-style stock that shoots the .223/5.56, get the Kel Tec SU-16. Despite being a plastic rifle, it's held up well in torture tests and has a nice look to it, IMO.
>If you want wood furniture, get the ARES SCR lower and slap a wood Shotgun stock on it, with some wood AR furniture.
>If you really want a rifle, with the M1 style action that shoots the .223 or 5.56, then the Mini 14 is right for you. I just hope you are aware how much of a dent the magazines will put in your wallet.
>>
>>33905918
Tapco. Gen 2. $15. Not a big dent in the wallet if you get a few.
>>
>>33905918
Mini 14 is good in ban states like commiefornia since it shoots common ammo you can get for reasonably cheap at walmart (can't buy online and deliver straight to door anymore).
>>
>>33905472
>Mini 14 in 6.8 SPC
Is that a thing? My dick is diamonds, the hardest metal known to man
>>
>>33905711
The cost of a couple mags keep you away from a rifle that costs 700 less while also using dirt cheap ammo you could damn near buy 10 mags and a cheap reloading setup with the difference
>>
>>33906174
Yep, it's discontinued but it existed for a few years. Otherwise accuracy systems does 6.8, 6mm, 204 ruger, and 6.5 conversions
>>
>>33905402
If you want a really good ranch rifle in 5.56. get a cz 527 carbine. Beautiful wood, extremely accurate, amazing trigger. Light and handy.

I've owned a couple of minis over the years and never kept them.
>>
>>33905402
Of course the mini 14 is viable. If you ever get into a gun fight (you won't) where both you and your opponent utilize carbines (you REALLY won't), the advantage would go to whoever got the first clean shot. AR, AK, Mini-14, SKS, SCAR-16, etc all have their own advantages but all of them are well beyond the line of 'viable'. Stop splitting hairs and buy the gun you like. You don't have to justify every single purchase, sometimes guns are just for fun.

>the complaints of today's troops in regards to the stopping power of 5.56 are completely unfounded, but the complaints of yesteryear's troops in regards to the stopping power of .30 carbine are to be regarded as gospel

It performed excellent in its intended role. Everyone who normally would have gotten a handgun or submachinegun was armed with a carbine instead, increasing their combat effectiveness. It was never intended to be a main infantry rifle and the army was retarded for trying to shoehorn it in as such, but that is no fault of the gun.

I'm considering buying a Mini-14 to replace my AR. Why? Because I live in a cuck state and could sell my preban AR for about $1300 and buy a preban Mini for about $500.

That's a lot of money to turn down. Especially since if they change the AWB laws here, either better or worse, my AR goes back to being a $700 mongrel.
>>
>>33905682

>Looking for mini-14s on Gunbroker.
>See a GB being sold without mention it's a GB.
>Figure I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway.
>Check back after it ended and it went for $480 with no reserve.
>>
>>33905402
Mini-14 is fine, but they now cost as much as a basic AR and magazines are more expensive and less available.

Get one if you like the action or the way they look. Just do some research there was some variation in quality over the years, make sure you get a good one.

dude, this M1 Crabine is what grandpas used to kill gerry and jap in ww2, and fight commies in Korea and Vietnam.
Mini-14 is powerful than this.
Forget what "Tactical" things , bullet kill people , not gun. Mini-14 fire .223 as same as AR-15.

Is it true you can't shoot Tula and other cheap AK ammo out of a Mini Thirty?

That seems so weird since Mini 14s are known to shoot shit ammo just fine.

>is 'x' still viable?

these threads need to stop. "x" is just as viable as it always was. Just because other things are better, doesn't mean it somehow became less effective.

"x" will still get the job done, just as well as it did back in "xxxx".
>>
>>33911464
Shame that the XGI will never get the bugs worked out and released into the wild
>>
>>33905402
Are you fucking retarded? If you already have a bunch of ARs, why would you use a mini 14 for self defense?

If you want a mini 14 just to have a mini 14, go get one, but don't use one for HD when you have something better already fucking available.
>>
>>33911804

You can but it's more prone to light primer strikes. Which is fine for range shooting since it gives you a chance to practice clearing jams, just want to stick with higher quality ammo for HD use.
>>
Yes, it is. The AR is just better in every way that doesn't have to do with legality.
