What would be your vehicle of choice for an SHTF situation? Specifically an SHTF situation in which you'll be seeing combat.
>inb4 tank
I mean a vehicle that is easily obtainable in the United States.
>inb4 bike
Bikes are great for SHTF, not requiring gasoline or as much maintenance. But let's say you've already got a bike and are going to get a motorized vehicle. What would it be?

Is there any advantage to a regular Wrangler over an Unlimited in an shtf situation? More room for a fuckload of guns and ammo seems like a good thing.

Unlimited has a longer wheelbase, and two extra doors. Kind of useless imo. If you can find a Wrangler LJ (aka "long jeep"), snap that up. It's a short production run variation of the TJ (OP's pic) from around '08. Two doors, long body and frame. If you remove the back seat and top it becomes a neat little truck.

>>33880458
Joining the chorus. Jeep YJ is my pick. It's in my driveway, it's dead simple and it works. It can be torn apart with a screwdriver and some sockets and the ignition and electrical systems are easy to understand. Nothing compares for simplicity, except maybe an old Chevy K5.

land cruiser diesel
>>
>>33880458
Probably a Volkswagen midsized sedan diesel.
Diesel has a longer shelf life and the engines can run pure ethanol as fuel.
Also great gas mileage and diesel will be easier to find because it's less commonly used and really only used by large trucks which people wouldn't be driving.
However, what i would want is a giant transportation truck with one of those large gas tanks that are used to refuel gas stations.
I would have all the fuel I need.
Also armor your car up with some steel plates.

Some sort of electric car, not necessarily solar powered. Electric cars have less moving parts and can take electricity generated by any source. I can build a small dam and have hydroelectricity for example. They're quiet too and don't give out tell tale car exhaust smell. Problem is battery life but they should last 10 years or so.
>>
>>33881526
No, it doesn't. It has a cargo area that's 6" wide and intruded upon by the rear seat.

It DOES have room for 4 adults though (assuming they bring nothing with them except the clothes on their backs, and at least 2 of them are skinny and none are morbidly obese), so I suppose if you never intended on ever having any passengers...it would still lose to most compact sedans in total available space.

>A. Take backroads and avoid the heavy trafficked roads because everyone and their mom will think to go to the freeway
>B. Be armed
>C. Maintain something tradeable that could be bartered with

As far as breakdowns, I operate on this philosophy:

>Plan for your car to die along the way.
Bring extra fluids, fuel, filter and whatnot, but do not expect it to get to your destination in one piece. When you pack, make sure your core essentials are ready to go at a moment's notice. Pack extras (since it's a fucking car and not a horse) like another 400 rounds of ammo or whatever the fuck, but if your car goes under you make sure you abandon it or it will slow you the fuck down.

Ideally you should be able to use your vehicle as a makeshift shelter for a day or two. Remember that it will draw attention from others.

>>33881558
Depends on the jeep. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better off-road capable vehicle straight from the factory. Those safety ratings are based on everyday normal life and highway performance, not SHTF performance.
>>
>>33881569

Yet vehicles rollovers of all kinds are less than 1% of accidents. What is the roll over angle of a Land Rover 110 with 7" portal axles and 35" tires, assuming there is no roof rack or roof carried gear. Also assume a full tank of fuel.

What's the rollover angle?

See, you really don't know what you're talking about. You have wikipedia like understanding which means you know nothing.

>>
>>33881249
>liberal parts of the US

thats europe dude
>>
>>33881823
It is, and center of gravity does not have to do solely with lift as it's more dependant on weight distribution in relation to the height. But, you knew that right. Also roll over accents have to do with either crossing the rollover angle or inertial forces that exceed gravitational forces.
>>
>>33881428
Roads aren't going to magically get destroyed unless you're talking nuclear war or such.
Other than a midsized sedan you can also do a diesel truck(not the transport kind) but it has shit fuel efficiency so yeah, mid sized sedan at 50 mpg on highway is a pretty good option.

Best vehicle is something that was in production when SHTF, car lots full of salvageable parts, win/win I love my old jeeps, but if they break down or I need parts I'm fucked
>>
>>33882684
Nice!

Also, armoring the cab is actually not that expensive. Get some 14"? AR500 swinging steel target plates and weld/bolt them into the door and driver's seat. Post some bolts over the rear window to hang a plate to protect the driver's head?

Armor is the one thing I feel I'm missing from my YJ and its half-doors. But the open top is so comfy and nice when S isn't HTF...

Why do I get SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER gas mileage with the 1300lb+ heavier vehicle with the 33% more displacement engine and lower gears than the other two? Why are V6's such shit at fuel economy? Why would you want a SHTF vehicle that can't even go 300 miles on a single tank? For that matter why would you want ANY vehicle that only has a 15gal tank to start with?

There's no fucking way that would do it as even with only 6 cylinders firing it would still be displacing more per stroke than either of the actual V6's while still weighing more, having similar aerodynamics, and having lower gear ratios in the top end.

It also doesn't explain the vastly higher city mileage when it doesn't actually cut out any of the cylinders.

I mean, I know Toyota is fucking famous for having rough and inefficient transmissions in their trucks and SUV's, it's part of the reason they live so long. But the Jeep transmissions have always been solid performers that drag their shit-tier engines up to usable status.

How the fuck are we supposed to know if your wife's Taco is an access cab with a long box and your dumbass Chevy is a fucking two-door cheapo? We don't. And you want to pose the question of why the bigger machine sucks less fuel than the smaller ones, while saying nothing of the specifics of the vehicles.

>Muh gear ratios
What about wheels and tires? 4WD or not? Five speed or six? What is each exhaust system like? Does her Taco have a box cover or topper? Does your shitbox have a box cover or taco? (Seriously you have no idea how much wind the box grabs)

Literally anything done to any vehicle will make some change in the fuel economy, so this is going nowhere as is.

The engines and gearing of trucks necessary for them to do their jobs means that smaller trucks aren't really any more efficient than larger ones.

Plus, the higher priced offerings from a manufacturer tend to have newer, more efficient, and more expensive engine designs.

Lastly, you're a shitty driver. I get 21mpg out of a 1999 4.0 V6 with 300k miles. Inferior tech, and worn out to boot, yet better numbers. Your new truck probably has some retard-proofing that offset your lead foot somewhat.

you'd have better luck sticking with a production vehicle. many manufacturers interchange different components between vehicles models; alternators, engine heads, suspensions, etc. even the humvees in the motorpools now don't have all the parts they need to function properly. you'd be better of siphoning the jp-8 and looting the nearly dead batteries from the passenger seat.

>not wanting a vehicle that can do this

https://youtu.be/gP8rp0yWF4k

Step it up senpai
>>
>>33880458
I see a few factors

A. do you want your vehicle to be a magnet for fire
B. do you want a vehicle that will reasonably withstand small arms fire
C. how much shit/people do you need to move
D. do you need all-terrain?
E. do you need something that can run on alternative fuel? (usually a diesel engine)

at the risk of inciting flaming, the hilux unbreakable meme I think stems from a lack of diversity of vehicles in some regions resulting in an abundance of spare parts.

If you were in an urban area, the roads would almost invariably become impassable in a week, and jammed with traffic within a day
either a 4x4 that could shunt other vehicles out of your way and had a winch for clearing
and something you could drive harder on the outside strip of the road
but honestly the road would not be where you wanted to be anyway

diesel is interesting, most cars couldn't use it but that might not translate to an abundance because people might simply destroy/waste any they found; or use it as regular fuel.
you also coundn't siphon gas tanks, post SHTF every trafic jam will become a hundred litres of gasoline
diesel would also probably cost much less at market

you can synthesize diesel, but this takes significant time and equipment; however long term it's a good option

I feel like car sales yards would remain pretty untouched, since hoarding vehicles wouldn't be of much value and fuel would be scarce
people might initially try to simply steal them for monetary value, but the result would simply be the cars moving as in all likelihood they would be too numerous to hide.
bottom line diesel 4x4's might be scavengable later on

I would probably favour a mercedes 4x4 people mover (...or you know, an ambulance)
then cut the top off an install a gunners platform

if the road is blocked, either nobody is there and you just use a shovel/chainsaw; or it's an ambush and you would have to dismount anyhow

Enjoy your shitty stock axles, engine problems and poorly designed steering. That 4.0 can't go 5 seconds before it overheats unless you cut some fat ass holes in the hood. Don't bother with anything newer than a YJ, and the XJ, WJ, and ZJ are all unibody disposable tin cans.

85 and older Toyota trucks are great.

Any Ford with twin traction beams (First generation Explorers [4.0 OHV a shit tho], OJ Bronco, OBS F150s, etc) is also a good choice.

Avoid newer Chevys because
>lol IFS

Last note, cars are not for offroading. It doesn't matter if you lift and put mud tires on it or whatever, because it will always be a car doing a job that a stock truck will do better with less chances of breaking.

>>33886657

>>
>>33886809
I really see the short term inability to scavenge fuel as a real downside though

petrol stations will probably be over-run faster than any other kind of building because of their relative remoteness and the short term need of the people who will gather there (as opposed to those who stay at home)

with gasoline every car left in a garage, immobilized or who's owner isn't bulletproof will become a refill

>>
>>33886899

>>
>>33886899
petrol would clearly be more desirable, but like I said people would take anything they could carry

in the first few hours people would all be taking petrol, so diesel pumps might work
but within an hour panic would overtake and neither would be accessible reliably

Hiluxies are a massive meme. We used to own a fleet worth in the old country, they're just the best easily avaliable truck in the area. They're really not that good.

The reliability is also severely overblown, they're maybe above average, but nothing special. I used to work on our fleet, with the kind of treatment a fleet vehicle gets its pretty quick to see the Hiluxies true reliability.

The most reliable trucks we had where Suzuki Kie trucks, they where nearly indestructible. Mostly because they where so simply.
>3 cylinder 2 stroke, carburetor

Also our Hiluxies p/w was shit, diesel or gasser, but gas was worst. Another thing, during thar dust storms, don't drive the car without special filters.

>If you're going to get a Jeep, get a CJ series.

Thats really bad advice desu. The early CJ's were built fairly well with heavy duty cast iron transmission and transfer cases. But they still had shit tier axles (which is fixable). Stay away from the 80's CJ's they had shit transmissions.

Early YJ's had shit transmissions and a carbed 258 which while a good engine and has good torque is a fucking turd on the street. Best YJ's were 91-94 with the 4.0 (these were also the best 4.0's).

TJ's are kinda wonky the early ones were good but then Chrysler started going to hell and lightened up the 4.0 rotating assembly to increase gas mileage and they are fairly well known for cracking piston skirts and knocking. Somewhere around 1999-2000 they changed the head and they are very well known for heads cracking. Then coolent contaminates the oil and takes out the main bearings. Then the late TJ's had 6 speeds that are SHIT! The AX15 and NV3550 trannies were good avoid that POS 6 speed!

And avoid the JK all together. The Dana 48's are good axles but the engines and trannies are shit. And you can not swap a better transmission in because no one makes adapters and probably never will. To relly build a JK the first step is to gust the drive train and start over. But even then the JK is just to big and bulky to take where you can take CJ's YJ's and TJ's.

JK's are for fags

Yeah jeep axles suck but i have a YJ that i have ran 33's on for years and wheeled it fairly heavy and never broke a shaft. I did blow the spider gears and took out the carrier while racing a S10 once but that was because i dumped the clutch and shock loaded it. If you avoid shock loading you can make shafts last. Also less than 1% of US households have any form of generator, 40% of those have whole-home LP/NG generators, and the remainder have tiny low-amp portables for power tools that couldn't run a fridge or electric stove and are basically worthless in SHTF.

>>33892683
Having been in a Pinzgauer, I can tell you with 100% certainty there is absolutely nothing fun about any part of that vehicle.

That being said, if you can stand having a top speed of 40 km/h they are about as undeadable as anything with a combustion engine can be.
>>
Guys I have a KJ, please make fun of me.
>>
>>33893787

My bad, my friends got a ford sporttrac with the 4.0 V6. He thought it was close to death because of something to do with the cam chains and they were impossible to replace without pulling the engine. So he was just going to drive it till it failed and it just keeps going. 4.0 V6 almost seems like a decent engine if it wasn't for that but i don't really work on fords i stick to jeeps.
>>
>>33893830
The SOHC model was noticeable less reliable than the pushrod version.
>>
>>33881204
May not handle this, but it's not that fast.

>>33881222
Would definitely handle this.

Pros: Solid axles, 4x4, mechanical diesel, no computer, 600 mile range, comfy place to shoot from in rear

Cons: Old rare trucks call attention, heavy (6,000 lbs) but lighter than modern diesels, can only hold 2 passengers in cab and not comfortably, spare parts can be difficult to find
>>
>>33893810

This couples was way upgraded it was basically a camper. They weren't just driving straight through either he was something like 8 months into the journey just taking his sweet time visiting all the parks out west. To this day I wonder if they had finally driven the Dalton Hwy to Prudoe Bay.
>>
>>33893820

a Liberty? hmm... i wouldent take one off road but my aunt had one with the 3.7 and she put a lot of miles on it and it was very reliable. But i have also heard horror stories about them being unreliable pos nightmares. I would own one with the diesel though.
>>
>>33893937
So far I haven't had too many issues except for a fugged radiator and some seals that had to be replaced. Hopefully that'll be the end of it.

It has a sliding rear window on the cab and shell... it can be done, but only in crisis situations. On the plus side it has a full 8x4 bed to hold your shit. There is a below the rail weather guard tool box back there now, so I've got about 6.5 feet. I've slept back there, very comfy, a few times.

I would take literally almost any full size foreign or domestic 4wd truck over a jeep. new jeeps are dog shit.

the new jeep axles are actually really good beefed up Dana 44's with bigger gears they Dana actually calls them Dana 48's. But thats where the good ends and the shit begins unfortunately.

IIRC they also had a low range gearbox option. No manual lockers but I imagine you could do well enough with LSDs instead. There's a dude with a Forester stateside that's running that setup for light offroading.

You could also look at the Suzuki Vitara, SX4, and some of their other models.

>Bikes are great for SHTF, not requiring gasoline or as much maintenance. But let's say you've already got a bike and are going to get a motorized vehicle. What would it be?

Buy a pickup truck so you can carry the bike in the trunk. Now you have more autonomy and you can ride the bike in places where the truck can't go.

I've seen the video of that before, truck was totaled, bent frame and a lot of other shit. Actually, a guy bought the truck for next to nothing and spent a fuckload of money fixing it up. It cost him a lot to get it like new again but when it was all said and done he still had a F150 Raptor for well below msrp. I personally wouldn't trust the frame even after that but yolo. He posted all about the repairs on a forum somewhere. I'm too lazy but you can probably find it pretty easily.

What is it with fancy boy mall cruiser jeep drivers that want to stuff the most massive tires under their jeep? Do they have no idea how the suspension works?
My zj has a 5 inch lift and 31x10.5. I would hesitate to even go up to 33's cause as it is now I can stuff one tire in the wheel well without losing my spring on the other side. Any more tire and I'm just losing travel / articulation
Jeep in OP couldn't go over a curb without stuffing a tire and be stopped or shred all the knows off

1990 Dodge W250, with Cummins, AKA First Gen Cummins. I'd recommend the 1991.5-1993 model years because they came with intercoolers, 7mm injectors (head is less prone to cracking vs the early 9mm), overdrive transmission (there can be problems with the sensor to go into od, but it can be manually bypassed, they have 3.5 gears in the axles for the auto vs 3.08 in the early ones cause no OD only 3 gears, better radiators...

I picked up this 90 cause it had low milage for a 26 year old diesel and was in good condition, and price was fair. The early ones are even simpler and easier to get power out of, larger injectors. But if I had to do it all over again I'd hunt for a newer first gen with the getrag manual in good shape.

The canoe is an Alumacraft 17, old as fuck, from the 60s or 70s.

Even sitting stagnant, your standard 86-89 octane gasoline is good for between 4 and 6 months depending on storage temperature. Higher octanes last a bit longer, but not enough to really matter.

With recirculation (either manual by shaking your gas cans for 30 seconds once a week or powered in a storage tank) it's good nearly indefinitely.

Gasoline stores better in temperature extremes than diesel does. Extreme high heat (100*F+) or extreme low temperature (below freezing) for longer than a few minutes a day and diesel will precipitate paraffin and either gel or separate in a matter of a few weeks if not recirculated constantly.
>>
>>33895168
27gal tank is standard factory tank. Secondary tank is a poly tank that sits on the passenger side of the bed in the bed skirt so I don't lose cargo capacity, and is command-switch-drain only (use it to top off main tank, can't run straight off of it) due to rupture and fire concerns in event of a collision.

Gotcha. When I buy my Outback, I'm going to add an 8 gal fuel cell in the spare wheel well with that same setup--feeding fuel to the main tank. Only inconvenience is filling it up, but it'll be a contingency tank. I don't want gas cans inside the cabin or hanging around outside where they'll get stolen or damaged.
