I can understand not wanting to jump through the hoops. I went through the whole process of getting fingerprinted, the application, the handgun class they make you take, etc. Was a huge pain in the ass and the 4 hour class you have to take is painfully dull. /r/MDguns is a pretty good place for info.

in that case it's shooters preference man. mossberg has home defense setups with shorter barrels. you can always go to a range and ask around to help you out in looking for something. PGC trap and skeet is just down the road from you. head there and ask someone. to be sure all the old dudes there don't just use over unders.

A Mossberg 500 is all you need, and will run you $300ish. Spend the rest on ammo and range fees becoming comfortable with your gun. It would be faster to name the bad shotguns. You can get some pretty good ones for +$500 like a Benelli. If it's HD only then look for something with a shorter barrel. Also determine what action you want. Pumps tend to be the most reliable and cheapest option. A standard stock is a good choice if you've never owned a shotgun.

is very good, i got mine for like $300 new with fancy sight, cus it was purple cryptex cammo...

top 3 fore parts would be

>mossberg 500/590 - comfy grip and not too much to fix if parts break, also best action bar lock (the racking part)

>remington 870 - a pain to fix, but also has better safety placement IMO action bar lock is iffy if you have little short fingers

>winchester SXP good luck finding parts, but good compromise between above two

or if you wanna go all out, look for saiga 12

(i have worked frequently with the above pump ones btw and have used benelli, beretta, and several others every now and then)

I say get a Mossberg 590. But that extra money you saved from not buying a handgun and put it into a model that'll last longer and hold up better in the long run. The 500 is a great gun, but the 590 is just objectively better.
