7.62x39 is superior out of shorter barrels and better for urban combat (it has superior barrier penetration)

5.56 is better for longer ranges and is more accurate usually (barring steel cased shit of course)

Both are okay at killing humans up to distances where it becomes difficult to distinguish friend from foe with the naked eye. Neither is all that great at penetrating cover reliably. 7.62 Soviet has more predictable results shooting through concealment.

5.56 NATO from an M4 will stay supersonic reliably just past 600 yards. 7.62 Soviet is supersonic out to 400 yards or so. Why are those numbers different? 5.56 NATO has a lighter bullet with a more aerodynamic shape leaving the barrel at a higher velocity. Why is that information important? Bullets destabilize when they become transsonic and thus precision results vary once you're trying to hit a target beyond that distance.

The precision of each cartridge depends on the firearm and ammunition manufacture. Don't compare Black Hills 77 gr OTM 5.56 NATO to Brown Bear 124 gr FMJs for example.
